Technology

It would be good to see some description of the kind of technologies used for this, or some links to pages describing it.

On the Seattle Regrade page it mentions sluicing, but doesn't explain in much detail how that works, which would be interesting.Pre1mjr (talk) 15:01, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Merger with Grading (engineering)

What is the exact difference between Grading and Regrading? I think this is not really clear from this article. I think the articles should either be distinguished in a precise and comprehensible way or merged. Fagcoc (talk) 23:10, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

• More research needed. "Regrading" is not even in the Cambridge Dictionary, but is in Merriam-Webster so it looks like an Americanism. But we should research the definition of both words properly before assuming their articles on Wikipedia are right and that they are the same. Bermicourt (talk) 08:00, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Update. Okay, I've researched this and my conclusions are as follows. 'Grading' is the configuring of the surface of the land by removing or adding earthen material to shape the land to its future use. 'Regrading' is the process by which land that has already been graded, e.g. to lay a road, is reworked for maintenance reasons or to upgrade or improve the layout. Of the two terms, unsurprisingly 'grading' appears way more common; indeed none of the engineering dictionaries I consulted had 'regrading' but all had 'grading'. That said, I also came across examples where 'regrading' seemed to be used for the first time the terrain was being shaped for a manmade project. But that seems to be just a sloppier or, to put it more kindly, a wider use of the term that gives it the same meaning as 'grading'. So my sense is that there should be just one article entitled 'grading', but the term regrading should be explained. The job of merging this article into grading (engineering) ought ideally to be done by an engineer or someone familiar with the subject. Meanwhile, I've added some external links to technical articles about grading/regrading at the target site (noting that hardly any of the links on this article seem to work). Hope that helps.
