Not Link Spam

slf67, why did you remove the four links to PC backup services? That is not "link spam", it is useful information. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.112.31.79 (talkcontribs) .

Please read the guidelines on external links at WP:EL. Your links were placed merely to promote a commercial site(s). Kuru talk 03:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok, the entire article needed a bath. I've cleaned up some of the language and removed all the random, unsupported, and unverified vendor claims. I have no problems if people want to start adding back in notable examples with third party cited claims, but please no random lists of major and minor vendors. Kuru talk 03:42, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Foreign location?

Why might it be advantagious to backup in foreign countries? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.149.7.20 (talk) 15:42, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Seeing no answer to this question, I am deleting the related line from the article. Ronstew (talk) 14:42, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Remote backup serviceOnline backupMove. This is today the most commonly used term by far. For example 2,320,000 google results for "Online Backup", 53,500 results for "Remote backup service". --Marokwitz (talk) 09:28, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Comment there are remote backup services that are not online, but this article doesn't seem to cover them... 76.66.197.2 (talk) 05:24, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Comment What you are referring to are "remote backup software" or "off-site" backup software, not "remote backup services". The "services" I am aware of are always "online" . Marokwitz (talk) 07:17, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
    • Comment that is arguable, since leased line connections to secondary sites are through private networks. And physical media duplication and storage in a disaster proof bunker is not online, though also not necessarily referred to as 'remote'. 76.66.197.2 (talk) 04:38, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Oppose. While online backup may be a subset of remote backup service, that is not a reason to rename the main article. Call me old fashioned, but the current name is more encompassing and has been in use for a long time. Maybe not in these exact words, but at least in concept. I loved shipping those 9 inch tapes to our remote backup site. Vegaswikian (talk) 01:05, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

The references are mostly a bad joke... two of them lead to the same domain, trying to sell articles. Those links provide no value whatsoever for the interested reader. Socramus (talk) 02:33, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Merge

It s all the same - isn t it? I think it is not clear that there is a difference — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.203.56.195 (talk) 10:33, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

  • Oppose. No, a file hosting service is something completely different . It is typically used for file sharing, not for backup. Backup poses specific requirements that are not met by most file hosting/sharing services. This article could be merged with Cloud backup, though. Marokwitz (talk) 10:41, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
  • Ok, i see your point, but many cloud backup services offer the possibility to share the data... Should be mentioned there, but i removed the proposal for merging file hosting service with the other articles and added the proposal for merging them with Cloud backup. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.203.18.226 (talk) 15:09, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
  • I support merging with Cloud backup but not with Cloud storage, which is a much wider topic, Cloud storage is used for many purposes other than backup, and remote backup is not necessarily done to cloud storage. Marokwitz (talk) 06:47, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
  • at least the differences should be made clear in the articles. Since you know where the differences are please put these differences in the articles. thx --92.203.39.205 (talk) 15:43, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
