220 hp identification
[edit]The 220 hp (12Fa) is usually refered to by its nominal horsepower rather than the letter code. There was at the time another family of Renault engines which has come to be known as the 12E series. The 12E engines had a smaller bore and stroke (120 x 140mm) than the 12F (125 x 150mm). Details on the E series are sketchy (probably why we don't yet have a wikipedia page for it) however there was a 220 hp model built for the Breguet-Michelin listed by Gerard Hartmann which he calls the 12Eb.
Since most authors of aviation books only list the nominal engine horsepower without bore & stoke it is not usually possible to tell if its the 12Eb or 12Fa which are being described.
The approach taken in this article is to only list the aircraft as an application where it has been clearly identified by model code or displacement.
