The Osprey book Men at Arms #194; Armies of the Middle Eastern wars (2) - plate E shows the red Defence Companies logo on a soldier. The Republican Guard is one of the successor units to the Defence Companies, with several of the units from the formation being absorbed into the Guard. This is a likely explanation for why the Insignia's are so similar. Here is a good page showing a list of various badges used at times by the SAA, although they're not very well labeled - note the Defence Companies badge is there too. The Republican Guard Insignia can then actually be seen on a member of the Republican Guard here. MrPenguin20 (talk) 09:30, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
