retro" derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning "backwards

Retrognathism simply means the jaws i.e. the maxilla, the mandibuble or the both are backward or decrease. Maxillary retrognathism means the maxilla is in a more posterior position with reference to the cranial base. The SNA angle determines whether the maxilla is prognathic, normal or retrognathic. Mandibular retrognathism means the mandible is in a more posterior position with reference to the cranial base, the SNB angle determines whether the mandible is prognathic, normal or retrognathic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cecilia Young (talkcontribs) 04:39, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
