Categorisation

Accuracy and sources

Wondering if we have the same person throughout, or are missing some information. The Highbury governors link, used to reference her DoB in the lead although it does not in fact mention her DoB, says she went to UCL. Agreed, Primefac. I'm in no doubt that they are one and the same, but I see no source that definitively confirms that – I shouldn't have restored the other name to the page, thanks for removing it. EttieBoo, Ria Lina PA, if you have other concerns about the content of this page, would you kindly mention them here rather than editing the page itself? Just as a general note, given that there is no definite connection here, that it's probably best to leave out all mention of the other individual from a privacy standpoint, especially given what types of sources we were seeing; wouldn't do to expose anyone unnecessarily. This article is limited

This article is very limited in showing Ria Lina's true intellectual potential. Her website says she has an M.Sc. in forensic science and a Ph.D. in virology. When she was on The News Quiz on Friday 23 September 2022, she said she used to work as a scientist. I recommend that this article is modified to indicate how she is a very intelligent person. Discrepancy in date of birth

WP policy says we have to include both sourced dates of birth. I see from the history there has been back-and-forth between the two. To me, neither the source that says she was 30 in 2010, nor the Funny Women website (which probably restates the date attested on Lina's website) seems of the highest quality. I suppose Lina knows her own date of birth, and even if she's not being honest, we have to at least note her statement of it. We can't just ignore that she says WP:ABOUTSELF that she was born in 1987, can we? Even if the 1980 date seems to fit better. ...

Anyway, not sure how best to handle it in layout terms, but because WP:DOB says that where separate sources "state differing years or dates of birth in conflict, include all birth dates/years for which a reliable source exists, clearly noting discrepancies", that's what I've done. It looks a bit weird though. I left out the specific dates (day and month) to a) reduce the clutter, b) because the 2010 source does not mention a date, and c) because WP:BLPPRIVACY may still apply, even though the date appears on her website.

What could be a better approach to including both dates as required? Just saying "born 1980s", and leaving out the {{birth year and age}} template, but keeping the note, perhaps? AukusRuckus (talk) 14:08, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

This might be a dumb statement, but if we have her own website giving her DOB, then we should use that; primary sources for personal information such as a DOB is perfectly acceptable. Primefac (talk) 14:24, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

I thought this too, Primefac: But going even by the discussion above at § Accuracy and sources, editors have been trying to settle on the correct date since at least 2022 – Lina's website was already available to us then, wasn't it? (Think it was already cited in the article? Well, anyway, 1987 has been reverted at least once while cited by her website.) I was just trying to reconcile all the earlier approaches taken by different editors of the article and hoping to please everyone. A ridiculous approach, which is almost certain to fail. I can't learn ... Anyway, I lost confidence then, once I'd looked at the ongoing roundabout here and at the WP guidance. (Which often happens when I take a deep dive into WP policies – but that's another story.)

But yes, we're surely obliged to take Lina's statement at face value? – As with any individual, unless there's a very strong reason to believe someone was being inaccurate. If WP policy says so too, then we're good to go. I was just confused by the reversions and counter-reversions. AukusRuckus (talk) 07:31, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

Just in passing, gotta say that Lina's 1987 date does seem a bit inconsistent with other of her reported statements / timelines, which is why I think some editors reject 1987 out-of-hand. For example, Lina is quoted saying: "I first did the [Edinburgh Fringe] Festival with a play I wrote in 2000 called Ezekial Falling." Maybe she only wrote the play as a 13-year-old, performing it at the festival at an older age? Even just writing the play at such an age would be extraordinary. She is further quoted: "I then came back in 2002 and 2003 as a stand-up comic ...", so that would still make her Fringe Festival appearance at only 15.

Not to mention studying for her BSc at 13: Not unheard-of, but so striking you'd think it would be mentioned in coverage. It appears [although derived by improper SYNTH] her PhD thesis was completed in 2004, when she would have been no older than 17, if born in 1987. Again, not out of the question, just unusual-to-rare. Another source notes her completing her PhD after a break to have her first child. (I'm exhausted just reading about it!)

But anything's possible, right? I mean, being underage for the festival could mean she was fudging her year of birth then rather than doing so now, or that it's okay for 13- to 15-year-olds to run a show at Edinburgh Festival; plenty of highly intelligent people study and qualify early ... and this is all OR, anyway, I know. Not up to us to solve puzzles, but to follow the sources. Just trying to explain perhaps why there are misgivings. Myself, I'm all for going with her website's stated date of birth, but we should expect ongoing slow-motion edit warring, given all this.

Just regarding your last point, if consensus here goes in any one direction, that's good enough; I don't really like putting hidden notes when "see <permalink>" in an edit summary works just as well, given that I seem to have to revert people even when there is a hidden comment.
