Needs references

[edit]

I poked at the article format a bit, and added a reference. The article could use some sources & good citations, especially for the early programming history.--Lizzard (talk) 06:22, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The first reference is just a small paragraph summarizing the Lakeside Programmer Group. It makes no mention of the name of the company in Portland that contracted Bill Gates, Ric Weiland, and Paul Graham to build a payroll app in Cobol. I don't know how anyone came up with "Portland company Information Science" as the name of the company. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.87.119.205 (talk) 17:17, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One of the authors of BASIC

[edit]

Ric Weiland's early work was the heart of Applesoft BASIC and Commodore BASIC: [1]

On startup, Microsoft BASIC 6502 asks for the size of memory:
MEMORY SIZE?
If the user just presses return, BASIC detects the size of memory itself. If, on the other hand, the user enters “A”, it prints:
WRITTEN BY RICHARD W. WEILAND.
Versions since 1.1 print:
WRITTEN BY WEILAND & GATES

I think this is cool as I grew up with both a C64 and an Apple II, but I am unsure if it warrants working into the article as I am biased. 220.233.46.101 (talk) 07:04, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
