A fact from Richard Alston (gridiron football) appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 17 March 2017 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
"is a former professional gridiron football wide receiver" should this be "is an American former professional"?
I could add that, but I think it would make the sentence confusing. The most popular form of gridiron football is American football, so "is an American former professional gridiron football ..." causes a bit of a double-take. Many of our leads in this topic area read "is a former professional American football ...". Also, since he played his entire relevant professional career in Canada, Alston's nationality doesn't really define his notability and may be best included outside the lead. "While he wasn't valuable to the Browns at wide receiver," -> was not, feel free to disagree but I think it would look best in prose if the contractions were avoided.
Is there any information on him post-2008? Even if it's just a couple of personal life updates, if they can be found, they could be useful in expanding the article slightly. No worries if nothing can be found though.
Zero hits after 2008 on the site I use for research, sadly (LexisNexis - academic database with a good volume of Canadian newspapers). I've also looked at Newspapers.com and found nothing more recent than 2006. This is very common for CFL players who aren't all-stars, unfortunately. Once their career is over, they drop off the face of the earth until they pass away, at which point you can usually find an obituary. ~ Rob13Talk 22:52, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ref 11 should be formatted like the other web references (publisher, access date, etc if applicable). Otherwise, refs look fantastic. I will obviously assume good faith as the vast majority are offline.
Replaced ref with an NFL.com reference, as PFR is a bit questionable on reliability. The site doesn't really have a "reputation for fact-checking", but its data is courtesy of the writers of the ESPN Pro Football Encyclopedia, and ESPN does have a history of fact-checking.
