Happiness as a disorder[edit]

Here's another book review. http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/books/article847447.ece

The review describes him as a seasoned controversialist.

It cites an article in which he suggests that happiness should be classed as a disorder, since it fits many of the criteria. I'm hoping he wasn't serious. 99.9.112.31 (talk) 19:22, 24 November 2010 (UTC)NotWillDecker[reply]

It should probably be taken just as seriously as equasy. Tijfo098 (talk) 19:34, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
His central point however (“There are no discrete mental illnesses”) doesn't seem so foolish if you consider the GWAS studies. Tijfo098 (talk) 19:40, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The happiness article is very clearly tongue-in-cheek. Bentall's standpoint is that the paradigm of classification of mental disorders in DSM-III et al is broken to the extent that it's a block to progress. So - yes - proposing classifying happiness as a disorder is intended to point up the inadequacy of the classification scheme as it currently stands, rather than being intended to be taken seriously in its own right. Google books link[edit]

As to the deletions of the google books link ([1], [2]), this link appears to be potentially useful for the further work on the article. So at least let’s reserve this link on the talk page: Bentall, Richard (2009). Doctoring the mind: is our current treatment of mental illness really any good?. NYU Press. ISBN 0814791484. Personal life[edit]

This sentence seems out of place in an objective biography: Personal life "He has two children, Fin and Keeva (twins from a previous relationship), who live in nearby Birkenhead and who are full of the respect for their father that teenagers are well known for." (Although I appreciate the irony, if that's what it is.) Doug1943 16:19, 24 January 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doug1943 (talkcontribs)
