Walking across the Mississippi?[edit]

"the only point where one could walk across the Mississippi River is at Keokuk, IA"

What sort of undocumented nonsense is this? Surely it is not possible to walk across the river anywhere except within a fairly short distance from the Itasca headwaters. Frankly, the entire article looks like unsubstantiated propaganda for the Mormon religion, but this is one of the more blatant instances of this.104.159.151.38 (talk) 15:46, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Some of my first edits to this article were to cite the AAF. FARMS has not taken any academic stance on the idea, and this grandfathered organization of Scholars and Anthropologists appears to be the only group willing to assert themselves in an official way. With FARMS now dissolved, it only exacerbates the problem of which scholarly organization will take up a Liahona and present us with some solutions. I can assure you I was not writing Latter-Day Saint propananda, and am somewhat mystified on how you can blame "the whole article" on such an important subject. Cheers =) 76.76.247.95 (talk) 07:21, 16 July 2017 (UTC) A good deal of theorizing about the "heartland model" has been removed, and the article no longer appears to be telling us what to think about related facts. Is there anyone left who still thinks this article is promulgating beliefs? 173.14.238.113 (talk) 03:40, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes. Absolutely I think this article is displaying a one sided view. All citations are within the belief system. There is no non-Latter Day Saint organization that believes this is an actual river. I'm not sure this article should even exist. Farms was apologetic organization, not a scientific one, and should not be used as a source for scientific or archaeological statements. Epachamo (talk) 14:40, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It appears there have been some restructuring at the AAF, with new sites springing up such as ancientamericafoundation dot org and izapa-temple. With a lot of the same impetus that drove the society for early historic archaeology, you can find their old newsletters at archive bookofmormoncentral org periodicals society-early-historic-archaeology --and several new pieces have been put into documentary form. perhaps some of this can be gleaned from; with respect to a fair idea of Sidon and what it means today, whether in or out of the theology department. I want to thank you for leaving this article here. in making this observation, please note that AAF, SEHA, and NWAF were not FARMS. regards, thanks again. 50.215.218.33 (talk) 09:52, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
