Bass player[edit]

I questioned whether it was Marshall Lytle, because in Dawson & Propes' "What was the first rock'n'roll record", p 104, it states :- "To establish the song's rhythm, which had been accentuated by hand-clapping on Preston's original, Al Rex slapped the hell out of his stand-up bass and engineer Dave Miller mixed it high in the balance. "I was the instigator of rock'n'roll", Rex modestly told Haley's biographer, John Swenson. "I had this old bass fiddle that did not have a sound post. When I used to slap it, you didn't hear no tone, all you used to hear was clickety-clickety-clickety-click. Dave Miller said "That's what I want to hear!" He said "Put the microphone on that bass. Let's get that sound." That was the start of it." Now, I've known Dawson & Propes to be wrong elsewhere, and Rex is clearly not a wholly reliable source - but it at least raises the issue of differences between sources. Maybe a footnote is needed ? • Swenson's book is incorrect in a number of matters. I personally know Marshall Lytle and the source I cited supports the fact he was the bass player. What happened was Swenson got Rex's comments mixed up because Rex played on "Rocket 88", which preceded Rock the Joint, and that is what he was describing. He left the band right after, but returned in 1955 when Marshall went on to form The Jodimars. 23skidoo 14:43, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Fair enough - happy that it's now resolved for posterity ! Ghmyrtle 14:54, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I just noticed a print source is missing. I'll add a bibliography. 23skidoo 22:30, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Please see WP:CITE. Article must have footnote citations. Putting a couple of sources at the end is not enough to allow the reader to track down if those statements are true or not. –Mattisse (Talk) 21:55, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • Trust me, the statements are true. In any event, the two sources cited can be accessed at any library. That's why books were invented. If you feel any of the information is hoax, please provide your own sources disproving this. 23skidoo (talk) 14:50, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • The point is that an encyclopedia does not rest on trust. It rests on WP:V and WP:RS. You need to provide footnotes, per WP:CITE with page numbers for specific citations. –Mattisse (Talk) 16:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

article lacks footnote citations and has many questionable statements[edit]

Per WP:V and WP:RS statements must be sourced. Also, the tone of the article is not encyclopedic and contains weasel words. Parts of it seemed to be copy/paste. It needs to be cleaned up. –Mattisse (Talk) 21:53, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
