The Rossendale what?[edit]

This article seems to be one of three (well two and a redirect) that need merging into one. See Forest of Rossendale and my post on the talk page. --Trappedinburnley (talk) 21:21, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Late reply but I have just sent a request for this page to be moved to Rossendale Valley, so hopefully this might solve the problem. Broman178 (talk) 17:39, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge 7 November 2017[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested merge. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the merge request was: merged to Rossendale Valley. Broman178 (talk) 10:14, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rossendale ForestRossendale Valley – This name and article already exists, and is already described in more detail, at Rossendale Valley, so this page seems pointless. Broman178 (talk) 17:38, 7 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • The discussion on the talk page suggests that this page should be moved to Forest of Rossendale, currently a redirect to Rossendale Valley. The pages could be merged, but I don't think they are the same thing - the Forest seems to be more than just the Valley, and the Valley is a current name for the area (possibly without official status, although part of the Rossendale local government district) whereas the Forest is more historical. • Support merge, especially since Forest of Rossendale was already merged there. This should be a section (with more content) at Rossendale Valley. I've placed the appropriate merge tags, and notified the other article's talk page. @Broman178: If no one objects after a few days (or however long you think is good enough), you could just copy the very short real content of this stub into a new section at the target article, then WP:Redirect this stub to that section (by replacing the entire contents of Rossendale Forest page with: #REDIRECT [[Rossendale Valley#Rossendale Forest]]{{redr|{{R from subtopic}}{{R to section}}}}).  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  17:27, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Support merge. I know I was the one who first made the request, but I thought I'd explain my reasons more. I do think this page should be merged into Rossendale Valley because the Rossendale Valley is also known as the Forest of Rossendale (as the Rossendale Valley article explains) which is basically what the Rossendale Forest is. Not to mention the description in this article is quite similar to the description in the Rossendale Valley article which further supports the need to merge it. I think I'll give it a bit longer before I can consider merging it as a proper consensus needs to be reached here in this discussion first, and I'm a bit unsure at the moment whether to do it myself as I'm no expert in merging pages, although if nobody else is available to do it, I can give it a try with the steps you have suggested SMcCandlish. • Where did six years go?! I've always planned to write more about the forest (properly the Rossendale section of the Forest of Blackburn), but it has never made it to the top of my in-tray. I agree with Peter that we have two subjects here. The forest (a royal hunting reserve, rather than a large wood) didn't include all of modern Rossendale, but extended into Burnley and Hyndburn districts with a detached section at Yate and Pickup Bank in Blackburn with Darwen. When it was still a chase belonging to the de Lacy's it likely also covered the area in-between (Haslingden and probably Oswaldtwistle). I've never quite got the bottom of the Valley situation. I haven't found a usage before the Rossendale Valley Tramways Company which was founded in 1889. I think it may have developed into a term for Rawtenstall and neighbouring settlements that expanded to form a single urban area, but today Rossendale, Rossendale Valley and 'the Valley' seem to be used interchangeably. I think I can find time to write a few lines soon and have sources for the forest stuff, but where to put it? I don't have a strong opinion but I'm going to support the merge for now as it can always be split in two should things develop in the future.Trappedinburnley (talk) 19:27, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Since its been many days and no one else has commented on this issue or tried merging the page, I think as most of us support the merge, I'll try and merge this page into Rossendale Valley even though like I said, I'm no expert at merging pages. If I make a mistake doing it, please feel free to correct it, thank you. Broman178 (talk) 09:45, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
