No evidence that Erich Fried has ever published "Ich liebe dich" found

[edit]

I have spent hours looking for an evidence that Erich Fried has published the poem "Ich liebe dich".

Even if he did in one of his works his first work (except "Blutiger Freitag" as a nine-year old) was published in 1945.

But the poem "Love" can definitely be found 1936 in the book "Best Loved Poems of American People" edited by a Hazel Felleman, and published by Doubleday (ISBN 0-385-00019-7).

There are only a few German translations on the internet where most of them are gone now. I am confident to say that the claim that Erich Fried has written the poem is false.

If no one can point out the book where "Ich liebe dich" was published I would like to remove the part of the sentence "... is nearly identical in meaning to a German-language poem titled Ich liebe Dich ("I Love You") and composed by Austrian poet Erich Fried; the main difference is that Croft's version stops at the third-from-last line of Fried's poem, with the effect that Fried's poem contains two final lines for which Croft's version has no equivalent." because it causes confusion on whom to credit the poem.

I also can't seem to find Helleman's retraction, though this may be because the NYT archive is quite difficult to navigate and the search function is ineffective. Jonathanjong (talk) 09:24, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to follow up on the Epworth Herald, to see the original publication and attribution to Mary Carolyn Davies - but from here in Sicily, Italy I just hit a brick wall. Is that first publication checked and confirmed, or is it (yet another) [mis-]attribution? The reason I ask is that I looked for other work by Davies, which I found at the Poetry Foundation; the style and traditional rhyme-schemes used in her other poems are markedly different from this piece, except for the one piece 'Love Song' - which seems quite out of the character of the others. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/mary-carolyn-davies#tab-poems Ginestre (talk) 07:24, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
