Posters
This edit [1] by Brigade Piron says that "These posters are meaningless without information on their source." I agree that a source would help put these in context, but even without that the posters are hardly meaningless. They refer directly to the narrative in the article (the surrender to Germany and Leopold's morganatic marriage) and show that these had become political hot buttons. The descriptions of the two files gives the "author" of the posters as Belgische Overheid, which unfortunately means nothing to me, but we should find the information needed to put the posters in context. They contribute materially to understanding the politically charged nature of the times. -- Elphion (talk) 23:15, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- Elphion, "Belgische Overheid" simply means the "Belgian Government". It is also clearly incorrect since they are clearly political posters and, incidentally, means that they are almost certainly still subject to copyright. In any case, MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE states that
"[i]mages must be significant and relevant in the topic's context, not primarily decorative"
and this is the exact problem here since the lack of information even on their respective sources means that they cannot be integrated fully with the text. You are of course welcome to find the contextual information which might make the posters "not primarily decorative" but, at the moment, this is not the case. —Brigade Piron (talk) 10:34, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- No, they are not "primarily decorative". As I said above, they illustrate that these were hot political topics and material to the movement against Leopold. Your objection under MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE simply does not apply here. However, you raise an important point about the provenance and copyright issues of the images. I did not add these, and I agree that the source information at the image pages is not sufficient. Unfortunately, the image files were uploaded by an account that is now locked, so I'm afraid more information about these particular images is not going to become available.
- This site [2] lists the designer of the 28 May 1940 poster as "Vrij Van Zegel/ Almar Wervik", but no further useful information. I could find no information about the second poster.
