Restaurant in East L.A.[edit]

Hey, does anyone think someone should add something about the Tamayo Mexican restaurant in East L.A? I mean, it shows a great deal of his artwork, including a few watermelons and a representation of the last supper.

NY Times piece[edit]

Zapotecan Indian Painter[edit]

Or should he be descibed as a painter of Zapotec Indian heritage? I know nothing of Mexican art but the article states that his parents were mestizo, therefore not indian. When I traveled to Oaxaca I met a lot of people who were fluent in Zapotec language (as well as Spanish), regarded themseves of Zapotec heritage, but did not consider themselves Zapotec Indians, would this be the case too?

Saying he was "Zapotec indian" and then Mestizo in the same sentence is completely confusing. In Mexico these are mutually exclusive terms unless further explained, however, in Oaxaca the line is thinner than in other parts of the country. In addition "Zapotec" is more correct than "Zapotecan," and if you read the first article cited, there is a strong suggestion that his "Indian" identity was more of a myth. I am rewording. Rufino himself was proud to be Zapotec and is described as such in books and catalogs of his art shows. In most art books, including Artists from Latin American Cultures: A Biographical Dictionary‎ and Masks of the spirit: image and metaphor in Mesoamerica, his parents are described as being Zapotec Indians not mestizo. -Uyvsdi (talk) 18:26, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]
