Requested move
[edit]{{movereq|Russian Cup}}
Template deactivated, move appears to be complete. GrooveDog (talk) 16:56, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Russian Cup (football) → Russian Cup — It's called the Russian Cup, Rambler is only a (potentially temporary) sponsor. When the sponsor changes in the future, do we move the page? Of course not. That's why for example the "Carling Cup" redirects to "Football League Cup" since Carling as the sponsor may change. And that's why Rambler Russian Cup should redirect to Russian Cup and not the other way around. IJK_Principle (talk) 13:21, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- I support this. Second choice: move to Russian Cup (football). There are indeed cups in other sports, but the football competition is arguably the most important one. Conscious (talk) 16:13, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- Another argument is that too many football related articles in Wikipedia currently have links to "Russian Cup" and it would be quite difficult to edit every single one of them to link to "Rambler Russian Cup" or "Russian Cup (football)" or other. So the best solution IMHO would be moving this article back to "Russian Cup" and adding the "For other uses see Russian Cup (disambiguation)" at the top of the article. IJK_Principle (talk) 18:10, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- Just look how many articles link there: [1] An overwhelming majority of these sites link to "Russian Cup" as if it is the article about the football cup and it was all just fine until Lvivske moved (IMHO quite irresponsibly) the article several days ago to "Rambler Russian Cup" and made "Russian Cup" a disambiguation page. As a consequence we have this mess. IJK_Principle (talk) 18:21, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Just to clarify, the stable title was Russian Cup, the original request was from Rambler Russian Cup back to Russian Cup, and then I substituted the template to create a normal move request, which created Russian Cup (football)→Russian Cup. Most links are for the football/soccer cup. Dekimasuよ! 02:13, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose. Given the number of uses, it can be reasonable to say that there is no primary use. The number of existing links to the dab page is not a justification to move another page there. They will be cleaned up over time. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:31, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- I was just stating a fact, not expressing support for the move. At any rate, there are only two things on the dab page actually called "Russian Cup". The other soccer ones, for example, should probably just be removed--they are never called "Russian Cup". Dekimasuよ! 12:06, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Well in that case we need a bot or something to make most of these links link to Russian Cup (football). I've redirected some of them yesterday but it's not an easy job. At least if all the articles about football players that have links to Russian Cup could be redirected by a bot since there are too many of them. For example make a bot edit every article that has "Template:Infobox Football biography" included and has a link to Russian Cup so that it links like this: [[Russian Cup (football)|Russian Cup]] IJK_Principle (talk) 15:49, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- So, looks like I had to do it all by myself. Piped linked every single one of them. Just hope I didn't make any mistakes while doing so. IJK_Principle (talk) 19:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Page Russian Cup is currently a disambig with 9 choices. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 13:27, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
