General Notes[edit]

Basically I've just pulled what I can from Google, plus added a couple of bands I remember.

The 'engaged to Paul Conroy' - Ruth told me this herself - dec 1980 I think.

The 'Joy Division encore' - C Spencer on Danceteria list. New Order had played Atmosphere and Love Will Tear Us Apart previously, so I've edted out where it says this was the first time playing those songs since the end of Joy Division, see this gigography. --64.142.50.50 (talk) 04:49, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Joy Div Tour[edit]

Question: Did Ruth book that 1980 Joy Div usa tour that never happened?

Ruth did book the Joy Division tour for May 1980 - they were due to arrive in NYC a couple days after The Raincoats arrived - I remember this so well as I was in the Rough Trade office at the time. Shirley Shirley O 10:03, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm of two minds on this - I deliberately put it up there because it mentions her pioneering role in video - was that really her idea, tho? - and the destiny of her collection, which took up a whole wall of her apartment, was an issue. I'll check with Danny Cornyetz on the vid. I'll rewrite the collection bit including both sides, I guess.

I spoke with Parker Delaney about this. He says that Ruth's friends were all very keen for her collection to go to the ARChive, who had promised to set aside a whole seperate room just dedicated to Ruth. Despite this, her family were not impressed, and wanted just to sell the records. Howard Thomson then found a buyer, at what many felt was not the best possible rate. Parker also mentions another case of music memorabilia, which the family seemed intent on giving away, that he suggested they should retain as a "time capsule" but without too much hope. joly Wwwhatsup 01:20, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I worked with Ruth Polsky at Hurrah, and am not sure what her part may have been in the placement of the video monitors over the dancefloor. I was told that this was the brainstorm of Ron Jaegger who helped run the club. Ron then deputised one of the bartenders (Charles Libin) to run the video. Charles invited me (Merrill Aldighieri) to screen my feature, "Love Among the Mutants" to accompany the performance of Joy Division. I assembled a collection of video and experimental films I made and began improvising a non-stop projection to interpret the DJ's music. I started doing this about a week before the screening of my feature, because I did not like the change in ambient light that happened when the monitors were turned on in the middle of the evening for a single presentation. I wanted to create a visual tributary that could run with the music. I was invited to be a fulltime staff employee. Ruth often told me about the groups she was booking, and I began videotaping all the groups who played the club. George Scott was then Ruth Polsky's boyfriend. A few months later he died."
