Setifis (or Sitifis) was founded by the Romans, during the reign of Nerva (AD 96 to 98), as a colony for veterans. Although no buildings of this period are known, a cemetery excavated in the 1960s seems to have contained tombs from the early colony.[2] The Romans built a circus at Sitifis, which aerial photographs show survived substantially intact until the 20th century; today only a small part of the curved end continues visible; the remainder has been destroyed or built over. As the town grew, around 297AD, the province of Mauretania Sitifensis was established, with Sitifis as its capital.[3] When Mauretania Sitifensis was created, at the close of the 3rd century, Sitifis became its capital. In the newly prosperous town a bath building was built, decorated with fine mosaics: its restoration in the fifth century had a cold room (frigidarium) paved with a large mosaic showing the birth of Venus.[4] On the northwest edge of the town two great Christian basilicas were built at the end of the fourth century, decorated, again, with splendid mosaics,[5] and a Bishopric was founded at this time. There was a Jewish community in the area.[6] In the 5th century it suffered from a violent earthquake.[7] Although we do not know what happened under Vandal rule, the Byzantine conquest brought with it a major fort, of which parts are still standing. Under the Vandals it was the chief town of a district called Zaba. It was still the capital of a province under Byzantine rule and was then a place of strategic importance. The area came under Byzantine control for a short period which saw the introduction of Orthodox doctrines to the mainy Donatist and Catholic town [8][9]

  • It is found in the history books that the name of the Setif region dates back to the Roman period, meaning "black soil." This city was known as "Azdev", then "Sitifis" and later became "Setif" , Means in Arabic, "black soil".

Historians and archeologists have pointed out that a Roman civilization was found in the Setif area and the Roman ruins of Setif are proof of this ... For thousands of years, Sétif had been a descendant of a Cromanian man who descended from his Amazigh descendants - the free men - who were organized in the form of tribes. The Algerian state existed only after the third and second centuries BC when two kingdoms emerged: the Mesopotamian kingdom ruled by Seafax, The second is Messelia led by Messinaisa. There was a dispute about whether Setif belonged to the Kingdom of Minsa or the Kingdom of Sivax, and most probably it was to the Mesaiseal kingdom. This is because Minsa was a faithful ally of Rome. This does not reflect the Roman occupation of North Africa and the revolutions of the people. In 225 BC. This position was not lost until after the arrival of the "Juba", which was modified and made the city of Cherkhal his capital. After the defeat of Cartagena, Massinza Numidia gets a penalty for his alliance and remained under the tutelage of Rome. After his death and the death of his son Maseba, the competition between the grandchildren and the most famous of them, Jugra, which was intended to grant independence to Numidia, failed to achieve his dream and goal. They did not despair, but resisted that invasion, so that Setif saw the territory of the famous battle and the interval between Yogra and Marius. From 105 BC to 42 AD the intervention of the Romans increased and became more sedentary, leading to the outbreak of many revolutions, most notably the revolution of Tachfarinas, who was a member of the Roman army, and from 17 to 24 m organized an army of residents, including the inhabitants of Setif Who contributed effectively to that revolution.

  • During the period of the Roman Empire the region was called "Tamanouna". necessary]

It is an integral part of the Roman province of Mauritania Caesarean became Mauretania Sitifienne. Jugurtha was handed over, and Sitifis relinquished to the kingdom of Mauretania, successively attributed to Bocchus, then Boccuris, Juba II, and finally to Ptolemy of Mauretania, murdered at Lugdunum at the instigation of Caligula. By its strategic location, Sitifis interested Nerva who settled there in 96 a colony of veterans, Colonia Nerviana Augusta Martialis Veteranorum Sitifensium. Claude reduced Mauretania to a Roman province, divided it into two, and attached Setif to the new Maitreania Caesarean, capital Caesarea / Cherchell. In 290, Sétif became the capital of Saitan Mauritania (present-day Algeria), detached from the Caesarean Mauretania. The new province then comes under the diocese of Africa, itself under the prefecture of Italy. The region of Setif is one of the granaries of ancient Rome: Caput Saltus Horreorum (today Ain-Zada) is the seat6. There is a letter from Augustine to Novat, Bishop of Setif.
