Requested move 26 May 2019

– SEA Games is by far the most commonly used name (WP:COMMONNAME) for the biennial sporting event, both in the local and international press (i.e. the majority of third-party reliable sources) and in official (WP:OFFICIAL) uses by the organisation itself. It outnumbers "Southeast Asian Games" by several orders of magnitude in the English-language news sites of the region. See for example Google News search results for "SEA Games" vs "Southeast Asian Games",[1][2] or to be more specific, results from the Bangkok Post,[3][4] The Straits Times,[5][6] the Philippine Daily Inquirer,[7][8] and The Jakarta Post.[9][10] It is thus recognisable (anyone who knows the event would know it by this title), natural (everyone calls it as such), precise (no other similarly named events exist), and concise (it's short), per the WP:NAMINGCRITERIA. The previous move request failed partly because it originally listed only the individual events and not the main article, breaking the consistency criteria, something that should be rectified by this RM.   • Oppose - WP:COMMONNAME is a strong consideration, but it is less apt for handling acronyms vs full name. In everyday use in the real world, its expected that an initialism is going to be more frequently used, especially when the context is known to the audience being addressed in a particular source. For example, if you compare National Football League with NFL, the initialism wins hands-down on raw usage, yet our article is best located at "National Football League". This the more encyclopedic route, and is in support of WP:TITLEFORMAT: "Avoid ambiguous abbreviations", and because "SEA Games" is not that far ahead in usage. After all, would we ever consider renaming Southeast Asia → SEA? -- Netoholic @ 20:11, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
    • Fair points, but then we also have ATP Tour, PGA Tour, WWE Championship, FESPIC Games, etc., so that doesn't preclude using abbreviations. While NFL itself is an ambiguous abbreviation (and so is SEA), SEA Games and these examples combine the abbreviation with another word, becoming unambiguous specific proper names themselves. (An aside regarding your rhetorical question, though: we wouldn't rename Southeast Asia, but I do think it's very plausible that Association of Southeast Asian Nations will be renamed ASEAN someday.) --Paul_012 (talk) 03:41, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
      • There are of course counter-examples of articles currently named for acronyms, but those are a matter of whether the particular acronym is so strongly associated with that topic (and the full name so obscure) as to warrant use. Also, depends on whether those counter-examples have gone through their own move discussions to look at their particular circumstances. -- Netoholic @ 05:22, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Page titles should be as descriptive as possible to enable readers unfamiliar with the topic to access them. This is important as acronyms are often very similar to each other - although the World Wide Fund for Nature is almost always seen in the form 'WWF', the term has several other unrelated meanings (as can be seen at WWF). A move would bring these pages into 'conflict' (for want of a better word) with all the other articles at Sea (disambiguation).
As neither term is obviously more prevalent, at this point it would be premature to move all the pages. Gazamp (talk) 19:21, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
