I've tried to sort out the reality of what the S.51 did in the Cup race by going back to contemporary sources. Some of the quoted single /anonymous author web sites are not RS and after nearly 90 years it's not surprising that errors creep in. I found four French and one UK articles from the time:

L'aeronautique L'aerophile Les ailes1 Les ailes2 Flight

All stated that the S.51 took part and completed the race, so the modern reports of it crashing out etc are wrong. All also agree that Passoleva came second. The first two contemporary reports above said he was flying the S.51, as did Les ailes2, but Flight and Les Ailes1 placed him in the Macchi M.17. So the only disagreement is which aircraft came second. The key to the (minor) difference may be that the two that put the Macchi second were published very soon after the race, the others at least two weeks later. Getting reports from Naples to Paris or London in those days was quite slow. Notably, Les Ailes change of mind to Passoleva in S.51 was in a report from their Italian correspondent, not published until the end of August.

I've rewritten that part of the Wiki article using these sources, though it's not quite tidied up yet; particularly the refs need formatting. Will do.TSRL (talk) 19:51, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
