Burj Dubai Picture?

Should the computer-generated picture of the Burj Dubai be added to this article? It's still under construction, but a significant enough achievement to warrant inclusion at this stage. 70.124.78.66 (talk) 04:38, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

SOM?

Is Skidmore Owens Merrill a separate firm or merely a frequent typo? Rmhermen 14:52, Feb 5, 2005 (UTC)

"Skidmore Owens Merrill" is definitely just a frequent typo. 20:08, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Three Blind Mies

I've often heard SO&M called the "Three Blind Mies" due to critics' contention that SO&M's architects churn out substandard Ludwig Mies van der Rohe knockoffs. Surprisingly, I can only find a handful of google hits for this phrase, so I've not immediately added it. Should I add this? -- John Fader (talk | contribs) 16:36, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I found references in notes for a UC Berkeley architecture class, a Pulitzer Prize reprint of an article by noted architectural critic Blair Kamin, architecture critic for the Chicago Tribune, and an article from the New Yorker. Another source (which google finds, but which is dead and which Google hasn't cached) suggests that the name came from Frank Lloyd Wright - but I can't find confirmation of that, so it doesn't belong in the article. I'll add the nickname, and some context, into the article. -- Finlay Mcwalter | Talk 17:42, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Isn't their work such as Lever House older then Mies glass curtain wall stuff? The first thing he actually built that was a tall curtain wall building was the seagram building.

While I can't say I've heard the phrase, I have heard much about the critics' assertion. IIT's Main Campus, with the greatest concentration of Mies buildings in the world, was finished by SOM (Walter Netsch in particular) after Mies left the school (because SOM was given the task of finishing the campus). Much of their buildings mimic other Mies buildings on the campus, especially the Hermann Union Building and the Paul V. Galvin library, which mimic S.R. Crown Hall, but in almost all cases they come short of actually matching the Mies design - Galvin and Hermann, for instance, have the large plate girders across the roof, but do not use them for structural support like Crown does, a major feature of Crown. Maybe this information could be added to better flesh out the "Three Blind Mies" reference. - Duncanr 5 December 2005

Well, gentlemen, I won't comment on the cheap shot which appears above, other than to point out that SOM is the only firm in the field of architecture to have been accorded the AIA Firm Award twice. SOM has garnered over 938 design awards since 1936. Substandard Mies knockoffs? Who says that? People who design strip malls and shopping centers? People who would *like* to work for SOM? Ludwig was one of the "Master Builders" of the 20th Century. SOM is one of the few firms which also holds that distinction. 12.170.149.5 21:15, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Quality assessment comments

This article could be improved by listifying some sections as wikitables. TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 23:00, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Freedom Tower

I am removing the sentence that says the firm "has been recently criticized for its successful bid to design the Freedom Tower" until someone can add come clarification. Who is the critic? What is the complaint? The next sentence ("After Daniel Libeskind won the competition for master-planning, SOM was awarded the architectural design contract for the Freedom Tower, despite having withdrawn their entry in the original design competition.") Doesn't offer any explanation, but it at least has facts. Orthografer (talk) 04:51, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Esentai Tower in Almaty, Kazakhstan

If anyone has information on the Esentai Tower, could you please add it? Here is a NY Times article that mentions it: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/01/11/travel/20090111_DESTINATIONS.html Thanks! -kslays (talkcontribs) 18:28, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

John O Merrill is not notable?

What a shame that John O Merrill's article was deleted because of "non-notability".Zereshk (talk) 17:11, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

I noticed that Marshall Strabala was removed from the SOM well-known architects section because he is no longer at SOM. Based on the current list of architects, it has been my understanding that this section is simply to note well-known architects throughout SOM's long history as opposed to list architects who are currently at SOM. Kmsom (talk) 19:40, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

An alumni list would be better as a list article or category. Ideally, the people mentioned in the list section would be incorporated into the prose of the article anyway to indicate how they are relevant to SOM (WP:UNDUE and, to some extent, WP:EMBED). Infact, some already are. The list currently is OR/unsourced. Novaseminary (talk) 20:14, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Would it be appropriate to add 101 Warren Street to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill#Notable projects? - Marchjuly (talk) 07:29, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Adding information to article per WP:BOLD and WP:SILENCE - Marchjuly (talk) 02:34, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

California Supreme Court case

I'm not sure how relevant the California Supreme Court Case between Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and the Beacon Community Association referred to in Skidmore, Owings & Merrill#The Beacon is relative to the article. I did remove the embedded dead link that was added to the page by an IP with this edit and replaced it with a third-party source. The original link (archived here) was the actual court documents, so it might have been unacceptable anyway per WP:PSTS. I replaced it with this San Francisco Chronicle article, but even so I am not sure if this mention is just another case of WP:UNDUE. IP 73.41.83.109 has only made this edit to Wikipedia, so it does seem that they might have been more interested in turning Wikipedia into a news source than actually being here to build an encyclopedia. If this is truly a landmark case, it should not be limited to a single sentence or two in a section about the building, but probably should be expanded into its own section, further developed and worded more neutrally. Please discuss. - Marchjuly (talk) 01:50, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

University of Connecticut

It may be worthy of note that SOM is currently working on the University of Connecticut's new Innovation and Technology Park on Discovery Drive, set to open in 2017. I've got pictures, albeit taken with an iPhone, as well as web sources, available to back this up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LaPorting4Duty (talkcontribs) 22:14, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
