Created article

[edit]

I started editing this article in my sandbox about 2 weeks ago (November 16, 2011). It got far enough along that I decided to move some of the text over to the official article.

I still need to
  • Expand "STM32 F1" series section.
  • Expand "STM32 F0" series section.
  • Expand "STM32 W" series section.
  • Add photos of STM32 chips and boards.
I own the following products listed in this article

better infobox for MCU

[edit]

suggesting to make new infobox designed for MCU not for CPU, because existing CPU has no SRAM, FLASH, periphery, ... but has lot of not important informations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.143.99.132 (talk) 11:42, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photo requests

[edit]
I found this photo in MediaWiki Commons but it has a weird color

Sbmeirow

We need photos for this article. I can't find any STM32 related photos on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. I might have to try take photos of my discovery boards.

Photo requests
  • Photos of any STM32 chip.
  • Photos of any boards with STM32 chips on them.

Edit Requests

[edit]

{{Request edit}}

Since you've included an image to the LeafLabs Maple, would you please also include a link to the libmaple C library in the list of "Free C software libraries"? This link is appropriate: http://leaflabs.com/docs/libmaple.html

Disclosure: I, Marti Bolivar (mbolivar@leaflabs.com), am the primary author and maintainer of libmaple. I am also a LeafLabs employee. As such, I believe there's a conflict of interest preventing me from making this edit myself. 68.101.69.198 (talk) 18:11, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marti, Thanks for using the Request edit template. However, I don't believe this link is encyclopedic because of WP:ELNO#4 . Sorry. Woz2 (talk) 00:04, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I guess that the lists given in the Development boards and Development tools sections are a tad too detailed and should probably be reduced to include only entries which are themselves notable.

As a side effect, this will resolve the {{Citation style}} issue, for I’ve just checked and the rest of the links are listed as references, and not in the body of the article. (That said, this article still seem to rely almost exclusively on primary sources on the subject…)

If anyone is interested in keeping these links – along with writing actual instructions on STM32 programming – that’d be much appreciated at either Wikibooks or Wikiversity. (See v:AVR programming introduction for an example of such material; even if an abandoned one.)

W and J series

[edit]

I reverted a edit saying that W and J are no longer supported. The W series still shows on the ST websites but J is far less clear. The link http://www.stm32java.com on the wikipedia STM32 page has clearly been abandoned and taken over by a 3rd party. Is there actually a STM32J series? It is strange but I cannot actually find a reference to a actual STM32J series chip just some mostly dead references to a IDE. Mtpaley (talk) 00:03, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We do not delete things because they are not supported. If indeed they are not supported, we move them to a new section with a title like "historical" or "obsolete" and change words like "is" to "was". BTW, does "not supported" mean "no longer manufactured"? If so we should say that.
On the other hand, if you can't find a citation for a chip, delete is as being unsourced. We have a similar problem in articles about Subaru engines. Many years ago, someone somewhere posted a list of engine numbers with some engines that Subaru never actually made. The numbers made it into Wikipedia (unsourced, of course), stayed in for years, and dozens of websites published lists of Subaru engines with the extra entries. If only we had caught the error and deleted the unsourced claim right away...
According to STMicroelectronics Launches Optimized Java(TM) Technology for Low-Cost Consumer Electronics Platforms there was (is?) a "ST20 J-Engine", but it looks like software, not a chip. Mouser sells a "STM32-Java",[1] which is also software. I cannot find any evidence of a special Java chip. --Guy Macon (talk) 01:00, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong feature for STM32F41x

[edit]

″The STM32F41x/43x models add a cryptographic processor for DES / TDES / AES, and a hash processor for SHA-1 and MD5.″

At least for the STM32F411ve the cryptographic processor ist not available. So this sentence is wrong.

Article improvements

[edit]

The article was flagged with multiple issues, but as a new contributor I am not sure how to best resolve them.

  • Content written like an advertisement

Could anyone please pinpoint me to which section of the page this applies?

  • External Links

I do believe this mostly applies to the Links in the boards section as already noted below. Should we move the most important links from this section to the external links section and remove the rest in order to resolve this issue?

Stratom (talk) 13:16, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The main problem with this article is that it contains lots of links and citations to the maker's website and press releases. Moving links to the external links section won't really resolve this - what needs to happen is that the reliable, independently written sources should be located, and the article rewritten based on those sources. Anything that is only sourced to the maker or to a press release should be cut. Wikipedia is not supposed to be a product catalog, all the excessive detail about particular models and boards should go as well. - MrOllie (talk) 13:24, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
if "Anything that is only sourced to the maker" is true, then you need to get busy stripping apple.com links from Apple iphone and Apple Axx ARM articles. • SbmeirowTalk03:46, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thanks. Maybe some time I will have time for some improvements. Stratom (talk) 22:29, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Applications, impact, volume, market share etc.

[edit]

Hi, please can the article mention the uses of the STM32, not sure if production figures are released but here's some market research to get started (if this is a good enough source): https://www.cognitivemarketresearch.com/stm32-series-microcontrollers-market-report John a s (talk) 13:04, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I feel this may be just as appropriate (if true) for this article as the non-Microchip microprocessors mentioned PIC instruction listings: Some people claim that the Sonix SN32F series microcontrollers are clones of the STMicroelectronics STM32 series. Also, those same Sonix microcontrollers are apparently used in computer keyboards that now have open-source firmware from a variety of manufacturers. --DavidCary (talk) 06:34, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, I think it would be good to include more about the significance of this device and then split the (too) exhaustive product list into a separate list article. --William Graham talk 01:58, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
