Second in prominence[edit]

I'm really confused about the claim that Salcantay has the second largest prominence. Ausangate which is higher than Salcantay, in Vilcanota, is quite nearby and so, I would have guessed, would share the saddle with Salcantay. If this holds, it should also have a greater prominence. It would be nice if someone could check this.

BTW, I shot a picture shortly after takeoff from Cusco of a mountain that I'm quite sure is Salcantay. If it could be positively identified (it is certainly not Ausangate), and people think it is worthwhile, I'd be happy to GFDL it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kjetil (talk • contribs) 20:18, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The picture would be great, maybe upload it at first with a description like "mountain near Cusco", and then try to get the ID later.

As to the prominence, peaklist lists Ausangate as having a prominence of only 2085. I don't know the details of where the saddles are, but clearly the saddle for Salcantay is a lot lower than that for Ausangate. – Typo in INEI 2005 source, Salcantay is in Cordillera Vilcabamba not Vilcanota

It's strange that the INEI source (supposedly) claims that this is in the Vilcanota. All of the other sources agree that it is in the Vilcabamba. Perhaps INEI regards the Vilcabamba as a subunit of the Vilcanota? (My sources regard them as separate, with the Vilcabamba to the west of Cusco, and the Vilcanota to the east.) Or perhaps the source was quoted incorrectly? -- Spireguy 19:47, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the INEI matter is to be discussed further with User:Victor12 at Talk:List of mountains in Peru (section "Error on Salcantay and maybe others"): the List of mountains in Peru article was constructed by him from a list given in the INEI source. As for me, I noted the discrepancy between the two articles/sources, and since I found no online source that could explain or dispel it, I have for now NPOVed both articles with the full citations, but I don't own this INEI document. — Komusou ^talk @ 11:43, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P. S.: Victor12 identified the INEI doc has a typo for the last three peaks of "Vilcanota", which should have been printed "Vilcabamba" (details at the link below).
