Various unsourced "Batman" rumors[edit]

Here and on the main Sam Raimi page there have been claims about his desire to do a Batman movie in the past - alternatively offering that "he sought the rights to Batman and The Shadow, when rejected he made Darkman" or "he lobbied to/was on the shortlist for directing Batman Forever after Burton's departure, but the studio went with Schumacher". There does not seem to be a reliable source for this, and in an effort to avoid citogenesis am pointing a few things out:

Any published claims never expand beyond a one-sentence "sought the rights"/"lobbied for"/"was on the shortlist" remark that pairs Batman alongside The Shadow, making it likely they simply pulled from IMDB or Wikipedia. Note that If Chins Could Kill contains Raimi reflecting on Darkman by specifically referencing The Shadow but no mention of Batman. The Evil Dead Companion quotes Raimi as saying Darkman has "a lot of elements of a lot of pictures and stories that have gone before", only briefly mentioning Batman alongside The Phantom of the Opera and The Elephant Man with no remarking that he had sought the project.

In addition, the waters have been muddied by a recent interview during the promotion for DSitMoM, where Raimi expresses his interest in a potential Batman movie; many content-farm publications reporting on the Empire interview simply parrot the factoid that Raimi "sought" a Batman movie decades prior, despite that not appearing to be mentioned in the interview. Again, without a reliable source any pre-2022 connection between Raimi and Batman shouldn't be reported in this article. Mashed Potate Jones (talk) 09:41, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
