Third worst? Other than Coleman Young of Detroit, I can't think of any US big city mayors of the last 50 years worse than Yorty. I'm guessing that the other mayor considered worse than Yorty would have been a New Orleans mayor or perhaps Frank Rizzo of Philadelphia.

Here's an extract from a review of the book, The American Mayor: The Best and the Worst Big-City Leaders, by Melvin G. Holli:
  • Taking the first-worst prize among scoundrel mayors is Chicago's William H. "Big Bill" Thompson (1915-1923, 1927-1931), one of the most colorful mayors in the city's history, if not the most corrupt. Big Bill, also known as "Kaiser Bill" for his pro-German stand during World War I, accepted campaign funds from gangsters including Al Capone. Also among the "worst" is another Chicago mayor, Jane Byrne (1979-1983), the only woman on the list. Jersey City's Frank Hague (1917-1947) and Philadelphia's Frank Rizzo (1972-1980) are among the other notable rascals who have sat in city halls.[1]
I assume Mayor Shaw is somewhere on the list of the worst mayors in the last 100 years. -Will Beback 18:33, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Sam" vs "Samuel William"

[edit]

I believe that the subject is rarely referred to as "Samuel William Yorty". All three obits we use as sources refer to him as "Sam Yorty". Any objection to moving the page? ·:· Will Beback ·:· 00:22, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Malcolm X speech 1962

[edit]

In Malcolm X's May 5, 1962 speech he specifically points out Sam Yorty. This can be found at about 15 minute and 19 second mark of the video of Malcolm's famous speech. I would love to see this quoted or mentioned in the wiki somewhere. --172.251.204.186 (talk) 07:18, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Legacy Section

[edit]

Why is the legacy section about Frank Rizzo? 2601:42:801:A410:3D8C:1B0A:2746:8D39 (talk) 04:11, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Excessively negative tone

[edit]

The final paragraph under Mayoralty contains the following "Yorty's previous race-baiting demagoguery came back to haunt him in 1973..." This seems excessive in tone and indicates a lack of neutrality. I propose it should be reworded to better fit the Wikipedia standards for not expressing personal opinions on the part of contributors. Rtucci (talk) 02:55, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
