Merge with Parabaik?

[edit]

When I created this article, I wasn't aware of the existence of the article about the Burmese version. They're essentially the same thing, but it appears that most museums catalogue them separately. Should the articles be merged (perhaps using the English language title Folding-book manuscript), or are the regional differences enough to warrant separate articles? --Paul_012 (talk) 11:07, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Paul 012: Parabaik seems to refer mostly to a type of paper, while Samut Khoi is a type of manuscript. I would keep them seperate. --Glennznl (talk) 12:29, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting the impression that the current Wikipedia description isn't the most accurate. A brief Google search shows several museum sources that define parabaik as a type of manuscript or folded book,[1][2][3][4] which is essentially the same thing as samut khoi. I would appreciate clarification from Hybernator, but he doesn't currently seem very active. Maybe Hintha could help look into this? --Paul_012 (talk) 17:56, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Support Parabaik and Samut khoi are the same thing. A review of British Museum pieces and this description of an Old Mon parabaik in the British Library both note that they are called parabaik in Burma and Samut khoi in Thailand. However, I'm not sure what the merged article should be titled as museums do catalogue them differently, mostly because of region. I think someone studying Burma may not know what Samut khoi is and vice versa. Many, like [Google] use Samut khoi but I don't know if it is a much more WP:COMMONNAME. It doesn't seem further input is likely. Glennznl, does your opposition still stand, given the above responses? --Paul_012 (talk) 03:33, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Paul 012: With the input of user EmeraldRange I tend to agree with the merge proposal. I did some research and see that the term "folding-book manuscript" is used by the British Library and various papers to refer to both the Thai and Burmese variants. I would propose the title to be folding-book manuscript. --Glennznl (talk) 20:39, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Articles merged to Folding-book manuscript. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:24, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
