[edit]Does anyone else think that this page should be moved to Sana (disambiguation), and, after this, Sana is redirected to San‘a’? The Yemeni capital is by far the most common use. Picaroon9288 22:17, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
That sounds reasonable enough to me. SnowFire 00:19, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Done. I'll go check through "whatlinkshere" and look for anything that needs fixing. Picaroon9288 21:38, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- But this is not the preferred spelling of the Yemeni capital – could it be construed as a misspelling? Whereas, it's the correct spelling for a lot of other things. wbm1058 (talk) 02:20, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
- By the way, I just reversed this move. wbm1058 (talk) 02:22, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Uanfala, I don't think your reason for including this entry flies. This town doesn't appear in any of our lists or templates of populated places in Yemen and I wasn't able to find much of anything in a google search, so it seems like the place is non-notable. The argument that a reader could end up thinking that the capital is the only town by that name in Yemen doesn't seem like much of a risk, and would also apply to loads of situations. Could someone add an entry for a local band so that it doesn't get confused with other bands of the same name? I would think we'd need a more special reason to ignore WP:DABRELATED.
Alternatively, if you're aware of any kind of sourced information about the place, why aren't we adding that somewhere? -- Fyrael (talk) 21:36, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- When I was tidying up this page I remember looking online to see if the place exists and after some effort (web searches were understandably flooded with results about the capital Sana'a), I was satisfied that it does (unfortunately, I didn't take record of the sources I've found). The place is linked in Template:Yemeni Civil War detailed map. Notability is not an issue for populated places (WP:GEOLAND), and dab-mentionworthiness is generally a somewhat lower bar anyway. Generally, if there are several places with the same name (in English) in a given country, it's best to mention them all in a dab page – I don't think we can count on readers looking for only those places that we currently happen to have articles for and no reader looking for places that we don't yet cover. And yes, if a reader is looking for a place in Yemen called "Sana" and they only find one of them mentioned on the dab page it's really easy for them to assume that this is it; at least I've seen editors make that assumption all the time (e.g. people "fixing" dablinks by pointing them to the wrong article). I don't think a similar situation is likely to be common for anything other than places – it's exceedingly unlikely that two e.g. music bands working in the same context (period, genre, region) would end up having the same name. – Uanfala (talk) 22:04, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, I'm seeing the place on google maps [1], though of course, this isn't necessarily reliable. – Uanfala (talk) 22:07, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- You say "it's best to mention them all in a dab page", but as far as I can tell that's simply your opinion. I'm not aware of any guideline or consensus for that. And to me personally, the requirement that a topic be merely mentioned in any article on the entire wiki is such a very low bar that we shouldn't just ignore it. I'd like to ask again though, if there's any sourced information about this place why aren't we adding it to at least a list somewhere? -- Fyrael (talk) 22:09, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, this is my opinion, and so far I haven't seen anything to dissuade me from holding it. For me, avoiding misleading our readers categorically takes precedence over following the letter of the manual of style. And as for the seemingly low bar of DABMENTION, I think it's an unfortunate consequence of the guideline's wording; the vast majority of entities mentioned throughout wikipedia do not deserve to have entries on dab pages, and as I'm trying to argue now, some entities that are not mentioned anywhere yet do need to be included. – Uanfala (talk) 22:27, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- I really am trying to not throw out as many DAB entries these days because I'm tired of undoing people's contributions, but I feel there has to be some kind of line. -- Fyrael (talk) 22:11, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

- I agree that there shouldn't be an entry if there's nothing to link to, but this should be an easily fixed problem? Judging by the standard of Fughmah, a one-sentence stub or one sentence in the district article might well be sufficient, if there's a source somewhere, anywhere other than Google Maps. SnowFire (talk) 22:13, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- There's an entry in the the Geonames database, and the coordinates match the location of the place on google maps. – Uanfala (talk) 22:27, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
