Order of Battle

[edit]

I should probably say something about where I derived my order of battle data from.

Brigades- My largest single source on EPS brigades and their locations comes from Victory Games' Central America, which notes that its Nicaraguan OB is "based on a combination of sources." Although I have reservations about some of its other OB information (and Altagracia was misspelled as "Alta Garcia"), none of my readings on Nicaragua contradicted VG on Sandinista Army brigades, and confirmed many of them. This is supplemented with additional brigades turned up in my research, from various sources I would probably have a hard time tracking down now. I know that this list is incomplete; for instance, I have a reference to the 55th Brigade in Region V, but no more specific info on its headquarters.

BLI- Various sources identified the names of BLIs. Twelve of them are identified in the State Department's Nicaraguan Biographies as having BLIs named after them. I encountered two additional names in my readings: Farabundo Marti and Miguel Angel Ortiz. I have now done Google searches on these units to confirm them, and have found references to all of them except Pedro Arauz and Heriberto Reyes; I was also unable to find references to any other battalions. The number of BLIs was variously estimated at between 12 and 17 or 18; according to an article on the web, 14 BLIs (and 19 BLCs) were raised, which if true would mean that all of them are listed.

Light Hunter- The light hunter battalions always got less attention than the BLIs, and I have had less luck tracking down their names. One reference noted that the soldier who shot down Hasenfus was from the Gaspar, and an article on the web identified the Cabrera as a BLC. I also believe the Cristobal Vanegas may have been a BLC, but I have not been able to nail that down solidly enough for me to add it to the list.
