Full-length article[edit]

The original page didn't do justice to the Saramaka people--this is a FULL update and the changes reflect the current state of research with regards to the Saramaka people.

Saamaka[edit]

I think the title of this page should be changed to Saamaka (with Saramaka redirecting here), as this is how they spell their own ethnonym, and it has become the standart spelling in academia in the last few years (see dialnet.unirioja.es/descarga/articulo/4392946.pdf) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 187.126.174.6 (talk) 15:27, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Title Edit[edit]

The Saamaka people refer to themselves as "Saamaka sembe" and they are not referred to anywhere in Suriname as merely Saamaka or Saramacca. Saramacca refers both to a district and a river, but not to the people by itself. Throughout Suriname, the Saramaccan people are known as Saramaccaners, and they refer to themselves as Saamaka sembe. The title should bear this out. Under the current title, Saramaka, it seems to refer to a river or place rather than the people.
