The Sarmatian Review

Notability?

[edit]

Non-notable. Cannot find significant coverage in RS. The journal does not seem to be widely cited or indexed in selective databases. As of 2015, it was indexed by American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies, EBSCO, and P.A.I.S. International Database[1] I am not sure about the first two but the third one includes gray literature so it is certainly non-selective. Maybe a merge or redirect somewhere? No. Loads of coverage in RS. Utilize google search better. - GizzyCatBella🍁 11:23, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What coverage of the journal specifically? Please be specific, with links. (t · c) buidhe 11:29, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How about this to begin? [2] - page 373. Satisfied? - GizzyCatBella🍁 11:43, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have trouble accessing the fuil view, but what I see in snippets suggests discussion of this journal on pages 373 and 375, which is likely sufficient for WP:NJOURNAL. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:44, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is "Sarmatian Review" still published?

[edit]
User:GizzyCatBella, on the "Sarmatian Review" website, http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~sarmatia/ , the "latest issue" is given as "2017", and other information is dated "2013". Is "Sarmatian Review" still active? Or has it ceased publication?
If it is active, is the contact, subscription, submissions, and other information still current?
How does one subscribe to it?
Is the information in the Wikipedia "Sarmatian Review" article current?
Thanks.

Central and Eastern European Online Library says that "The Sarmatian Review" has "ceased publication": https://www.ceeol.com/search/journal-detail?id=429

@Nihil novi In the final issue I found a notice "SARMATIAN REVIEW IS IN SEARCH OF A NEW EDITOR. THE PUBLICATION WILL BE SUSPENDED UNTIL THE NEW EDITOR IS FOUND. THE JANUARY 2018 ISSUE WILL NOT APPEAR AS PLANNED." It seems they haven't found a replacement editor yet... Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:59, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Affiliation with Rice University?

[edit]

The article currently states that the journal was "published by the Polish Institute of Houston at Rice University". The wording suggestions some sort of an affiliation with the university, as if the Polish Institute were a research institute / department within Rice.

This does not appear to be the case. A journal issue states: "The Sarmatian Review (ISSN 1059-5872) is a triannual publication of the Polish Institute of Houston", without mentioning Rice: sample issue. The Institute appears to be an independent non-profit set up for the purpose of publishing the journal. The university's web site is hosting the archives of the journal, but this appears to be all. Suggest "at Rice" be removed from the sentence in question. -- K.e.coffman (talk) 20:37, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. The journal is hosted on Rice University pages https://www.ruf.rice.edu/~sarmatia/ and it's email is "sarmatia@rice.edu". This is likely related to the fact that it's long time editor was a professor at RU (Ewa Thompson). https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/36133 states that "The Sarmatian Review was published between 1988-2017 by Rice University".
What I am unsure about is the status of the "Polish Institute of Houston", I can't find much about this entity. I'd suggest changing the wording to "published by the Polish Institute of Houston and the Rice University" instead. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:51, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure we can do that (...and the... Rice University) since the Journal itself does not make this claim anywhere that I could find. The page in question (https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/36133) hosts the back issues. The first one listed, as The Houston Sarmatian, includes this wording: "Publisher: The Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America" (https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/113733) and the last one, as The Sarmatian, lists its publisher as: "Publisher: The Polish Institute of Houston, Inc. (https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/36134).
The web page for the journal's site further states: "The Sarmatian Review is published by the Polish Institute of Houston, an independent, publicly supported not-for-profit foundation" (http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~sarmatia/editors.html). --K.e.coffman (talk) 01:16, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

To do. TrangaBellam (talk) 07:25, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@K.e.coffman: Go through the fourth paragraph in p. 69 of this paper; see note 11 (p. 82) in particular. This is an interesting "journal"; more, soon. TrangaBellam (talk) 06:50, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
