RfC: Is the apparently unilateral renaming of the article both properly and most effectively done?
[edit]Is the recent apparently unilateral renaming of the article as described below in Unilateral retitling of page? properly done in terms of WP guidelines and consensus? Also, is it the most effective manner of renaming the article, or should a different name be used? 09:52, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
question
[edit]"In the 1980's, a vagrant claimed to have been recently in Mexico having been drinking buddies with a man who claimed to be the son of Errol Flynn. This was never verified, nor substantied."
...Seriously!?
Surely Sean Flynn should lead to a disambiguation page rather than to this artile given all are fairly notable. As well as that 2 of them are of the same family and the younger relative is far more known nowadays —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.236.26.152 (talk) 01:46, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Official date of death
[edit]If "believed killed by Khmer Rouge in June 1971" is correct (see lead), how can or why would 6 April 1970 (date of disappearance) be the official date of death (see infobox)? 58.8.6.198 (talk) 12:56, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- My guess would be that this date was chosen when he was legally declared dead in 1984. They would have to pick some date, and in the absence of any other information, this would be as good a guess as any. Wschart (talk) 20:08, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- The quote "belived killed...in June, 1971" is just speculation on the part of researchers reviewing documents re: MIAs & POWs of the Vietnam conflict and it is merely their supposition and not proven fact. Sean Leslie Flynn's death certificate as filed in the Florida courts by his mother where she was a legal resident (she resided in Palm Beach, Florida) is a matter of record and as stated above the date chosen was the date of his disappearance, making that his official date of death! He is still listed as a civilian MIA on government records! —Preceding unsigned comment added by ANASTROFAN (talk • contribs) 20:22, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- As date of death is unknown and the "official" date of death is nominal, I've tried to make that clearer. I've trimmed the lead and the infobox to meaningful known facts, and moved all the speculation down into the "Disappearance" section, likewise the "official" date of death and added an explanation for that. 58.11.87.113 (talk) 21:13, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
I am adding this in the interest of completion. Originally when I was researching the "official" date of death as listed on Flynn's death cert. I used the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) as a reference & had discovered that a death cert. had been issued in Florida for one Sean L. Flynn, born May 31, 1941 with the date of death listed as in April, 1970. When I read it the first time I was sure it read April 6, 1970 as this would have made sense since that was the day he was listed as MIA. But when I went back to the website for SSDI-death records to my surpise it now read as April 1, 1970 for date of death. In leiu of not seeing the actual death cert. I have made the current revisions incorporating all current known material re: Flynn's death and no longer insist on an official date of death. I trust the current revisions will be satisfactory to all!--signed ANASTROFAN —Preceding unsigned comment added by ANASTROFAN (talk • contribs) 12:52, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
This what needs editing?
[edit]Is the header box for this page supposed to read "This Cambodia needs attention from an expert on the subject."? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.206.191.50 (talk) 21:40, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Crucifixion question
[edit]I've just read the biography of Neil Davis, a famous war journalist who recounts that there were widespread reports shortly after Flynn's disappearance that he had died some weeks after disappearing and that he had been crucified. This type of death had also been meted out on other captured journos so Davis found it quite believable. Is something worth putting in? I can reference the book ('One Crowded Hour' by Tim Bowden) and the page number of the quote. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.208.209.141 (talk) 23:52, 6 February 2012 (UTC) ~
Unilateral retitling of page?
[edit]I see no discussion here about the recent retitling of this page from Sean Flynn (born 1941) to Sean Flynn (film actor). While I agree that the "born 1941" disambiguation is sorely lacking in precision and encyclopedic style, the "film actor" disambiguation is in some ways worse, because there is another Sean Flynn, listed as Sean Flynn (actor). Are we to presume that the latter has never and will never act in a film? Are we to presume that most people know of Errol Flynn's son as "Sean Film (film actor)" rather than "Sean Flynn (journalist)"? I propose "Sean Flynn (actor-journalist)." But it's something I would expect to be discussed before I made such a change on my own. Was there ANY discussion of the recent change? I see no evidence on this page. Monkeyzpop (talk) 09:39, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
I think that the other Sean Flynn page should be Sean Flynn (television actor) and that if he begins a career in film the name can then be changed appropriately. This Sean Flynn should say Sean Flynn (actor/journalist) the dash might be confusing. Thepoodlechef (talk) 01:17, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
As the son of Errol Flynn wanted to be known more for his career as a photojournalist, I believe the designation should be Sean Flynn (photojournalist). As his nephew now acts under the name Sean Flynn, this would be the right designation. Any one looking for an entry on the son of Errol Flynn need only read the entry and find out everything that is needed to be known about his career as an actor and singer.ANASTROFAN (talk) 17:17, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
- While I agree that photojournalist is an appropriate parenthetical for that Sean Flynn, it was as an actor that he first became known, and I suspect that many, like myself, came to learn of his second career only because we were familiar with his first and more famous one. At any rate, he is now pretty well known for both, and I think Sean Flynn (actor/photojournalist) as a title is more helpful to WP readers than asking them to read the articles and figure it out on their own.Monkeyzpop (talk) 06:32, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay. Probably the best designation would be: Sean Flynn (actor/journalist); especially to distinguish him from his namesake nephew. ANASTROFAN (talk) 17:22, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
- Comment per RfC - I don't think that the subject's personal opinion of what they'd like to be remembered as should actually count for much. As an encyclopedia, we have to come to our own decision (preferably backed by reliable sources) as to why this person is most memorable. John Smith might very well prefer to be "John Smith (truck driver)" rather than "John Smith (mass-murderer)" - but if he is notable for the latter, then that's what we have to put here because the tag is there to help people find the article - not to appease the subject of the article. My question about "Sean Flynn (journalist)" is whether Mr Flynn is a sufficiently notable journalist to have had a Wikipedia article written about him as a journalist? If he's only notable because of his career in film acting - then we need that to be in the dab. The problem comes for our readers who don't know which Sean Flynn they want - if he's not notable for journalism then they will have no idea that he's a journalist until after they've read the article - and then it's too late! Indeed, if they are unaware of his journalism, "Sean Flynn (journalist)" will actually dissuade them from reading this article and send them to the other one. The date of birth thing might help them - they know they need an actor who is in a certain age range or from a certain time in history. Perhaps "Sean Flynn (actor born 1941)" is the best answer. Either way, we need to be very sure that the Sean Flynn dab page makes this distinction super-clear. SteveBaker (talk) 14:13, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Since the subject is known for both his acting career and his career as a combat photojournalist the best designation would probably be: Sean Flynn (actor/journalist). But since the disambiguation page already gives the reader a choice, I am sure the intelligent reader will be able to find the Sean Flynn he or she is looking for.ANASTROFAN (talk) 17:23, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
