Merge?

This could probably merged with Working dogs and then redirected. Peyna 21:58, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely not. working dogs is a broad topic that covers everything from the USDA's fruit and vegetable dogs to seeing-eye dogs. the interests and issues of such a broad range would make a merged article either uselessly general or too long.68.192.208.7 21:08, 23 August 2006 (UTC)kodoz

good article

Thorough and concise, this article should stand alone. It is an accurate representation of the subject.--24.20.107.250 16:11, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

EL

I just removed a bunch of external links from this article to comply with our guidelines. There was a link which is a reliable source and as such it can help build the article up and it can be used as a reference. I'll post it here if anybody wants to use it.

I am attempting to save this page as it is presently mostly hearsay. In order to do this I am trying to make a connection between scientific papers and the language of the dog training community. To begin this I demonstrate that search and rescue dog training has been going on for around 1,000 years. I am not happy with the way I have said this so far on the page but hopefully I can come up with better as I put more time into this effort. The references I have found and included are scientific and as such barely touch on the actual subject of search and rescue dog. The link from above: http://www.dogsinthenews.com/issues/0109/articles/010915a.htm is not secure and is not found. It leads to some kind of advertisement. Potentially this page could be lost because training and working search and rescue dogs is not part of any legal system with established requirements. Thus there exist many businesses which offer search and rescue dog training and they can be easily found online just by searching "Search and Rescue Dog". Thus there also exists thousands of pages of hearsay associated with these websites which are not usable in Wikipedia.

Search and rescue dogs - suggested new title

SAR dogs are part of the search function (locate and access) and not the rescue function (with very few exceptions). So, I suggest that this article be retitled either 'SAR Dogs', with an explanation that these dogs are part of the search function, or 'Search Dogs'. Putting 'rescue' into the title may also wrongly direct readers who are looking for an article on 'Rescue Dogs', i.e. dogs that have been abandoned and then rescued with a view to rehoming. Unfortunately the entire article is mostly hearsay because it relies on information gleaned from various training businesses. I have started adding scientific links but have not addressed the underlying problem which is that "Search and Rescue Dog" does not actually exist. The other underlying problem is that commonly used phrases such as "search and rescue dog" are part of our language and as such are difficult or even impossible to change. I am going to place your explanation at the beginning of the article.

Removed Missing animal search

I removed the section "Missing animal search" but am mentioning it here. Though I was unable to find any secondary sources discussing the subject, I found numerous websites promoting a business that would use dogs to help find your missing pet. Maybe someone else can find a good source for this and add back in some content. Normal Op (talk) 19:19, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Copyright infringement throughout section "Training"

I'm completely new to being a Wiki member, only having signed up because of the following but I've found that the entire contents of "Training" have been copy/pasted from here (paragraphs 1-3) and here (paragraphs 4 onwards), with occasional word changes - e.g. "by an airscenting dog" is changed to "by an scenting dog" (sic). I've flagged it for potential copyright issue and have blanked the section. Finding the earliest instance of this took me back to an unregistered user's IP address from 30 August 2006. Hope this helps Pattersonpat (talk) 13:42, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for being aware of the possibility of copyright infringement, Pattersonpat. I looked into this as best I could, and wasn't able to find any verifiable evidence that our material was copied from elsewhere. The earliest version of the possible source you identified seems to go back no further than 2012 (though it's possible that the same content was hosted on a different domain before that); the stuff has been in the article for much longer. This can happen – sometimes we can be sure that the content must have been copied, but can't actually prove it. However, since it was quite unencyclopaedic and (with one tiny exception) completely unsourced, I've removed that section. That just leaves the problem of what to do with the rest of the article, most of which is equally unsourced, and similarly unencyclopaedic.
