The criticism documentation of the sword of shannara does not belong under the section heading of the first trilogy it is well documented and appropriate on the sword of shannara page. Thus that single line of criticism documentation has been removed from this section.

Conflicting Claims

According to the article the books are chronologically set in the following order:

Year 0: The First King of Shannara - same time as The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy
Year 500: The Original Shannara Trilogy
Year 800: The Heritage of Shannara Tetralogy
Year 950: The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy

As you can see The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy appears both in year 0 (year numbers are made up for this post) and year 950. So which is it? Same time as the First King of Shannara or approximately 950 years after the First King of Shannara? --John Lynch 08:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The prequel The First King of Shannara is set during the lifetime of Jerle Shannara
This is what you're referring to, I assume. Jerle Shannara is the "First King" himself. The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy refers in its title to the airship named after the king. --EvilFred 00:57, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Order of Series

The listing of series is pretty much in chronological order of publication, except the Word/Void trilogy is listed second-to-last. It actually came out after First King and before the Voyage trilogy. Wouldn't it be better to place it there? I can't think of a good justification for having it where it is. I imagine it was there because it was unsure if it was Shannara's world, and then it stayed there when the Genesis series was added at the end, but it seems as if it's justification for being listed last is no longer relevant. Pronunciation

Although most fans pronounce Shannara /ʃəˈnɑːrə/, Terry Brooks (the author of the series) pronounces it /ˈʃænərə/ (with the stress on the first syllable, which has the same vowel as 'cat'), as evidenced in this interview, near 08:22: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztu3Xj3UuMo&feature=youtu.be&t=8m22s. However, he has publicly stated (for example, about 1/3 of the way down the page here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/1a3261/i_am_terry_brooks_author_of_the_shannara_series) that he doesn't really care how people pronounce the names in his books. Shannara family section

Do we really need a seperate section here, seems like we could merge it with the list of novels section, maybe a small paragraph about the family is warranted but do we need to outline how the family is involved or not in each book? Who is Jerle Shannara? Why isn't this explained in the Character section? The link associated with his name is BS. It simply reverts back to the top of the section. Explaining who he is would seem intrinsic to this article. Gil gosseyn (talk) 05:07, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

High/Low Fantasy?

The article claims this is High Fantasy, yet Shannara actually exists on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Going on what the Low Fantasy article states, this would classify as Low Fantasy. No, I don't think so. First, epic fantasy = high fantasy, and Terry Brooks' site describes them as the former. However, I think that the three Word & Void novels might be low fantasy... —Ed (TalkContribs) 02:23, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Shannara certainly does not fit the definition given in High fantasy: "High fantasy is defined as fantasy set in an alternative, fictional ("secondary") world, rather than "the real", or "primary" world."
The article on High fantasy you refer to gives what I believe is pretty much a standard definition in the very first line: "HF is (...) defined either by its setting in an imaginary world or by the epic stature of its characters, themes, and plot." Chronological section is missing short stories, The Dark Wraith of Shannara graphic novel

As the subject states, the chronological listing of the novels is missing the short stories and the graphic novel. Of course, once they are added, the name of the section might need to be changed from "Chronological List of Novels" to show that it includes those missing items.

Paladins of Shannara 01 - Allanon's Quest is an e-book short story set directly before The Sword of Shannara.

Paladins of Shannara 03 - The Black Irix is an e-book short story set soon after The Sword of Shannara.

Paladins of Shannara 02 - The Weapons Master's Choice is an e-book short story set sometime before The Wishsong of Shannara.

Indomitable is a short story published in the anthology Legends II, set a few years after The Wishsong of Shannara.

The Dark Wraith of Shannara is a Graphic Novel that shows part of the events of Indomitable, along with a continuation of the story.

There are two other short stories, according to the main Terry Brooks article:

Walker and the Shade of Allanon (Spring 2013) (short story published in Unfettered: New Tales by Masters of Fantasy - This short excerpt is more of a deleted scene than a short story, and takes place during chapter eight of The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara 01: The Ilse Witch.

Imaginary Friends (1991 & Spring 2013) (Word/Void short story published in anthology Once Upon a Time: A Treasury of Modern Fairy Tales, re-published in Unfettered: New Tales by Masters of Fantasy.- Hmm, having JUST NOW read this story, I'd say it shouldn't be included in the chronological listing. It's not a Word/Void story per se, but rather a short juvenile adventure story that shares elements from the later Word/Void works. Links on the page to The Four Lands and The Great Wars go to this article itself, which has minimal information on The Four Lands (and the link goes to the top of the Shannara article rather than to the section on the Setting) and even less about The Great Wars - with the GW link redirecting again to the top of the Shannara article rather than anywhere useful. I agree as well. I think the Wiki process is that someone nominates these dead redirect articles via WP:RfD for deletion.

Types of mythological or fantastic beings in contemporary fiction is a page of, well, fantasy series (movie, TV, written, whatever) and the assorted mythological and/or fantastic critters they contain.
