Shaq's team

He currently plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The trade transferred Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, the 2nd round draft pick, and $500 thousand in cash from the Phoenix Suns to the Cavaliers in exchange for rights to Shaquille O'Neal.

Per WP:CRYSTAL, we only change roster details after a transaction has been completed. This trade has yet to be finalized and won't received league approval until sometime Thursday at the earliest. --Madchester (talk) 12:10, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Number 33

I was trying to find why Shaq couldn't use #33 as a rookie, since I remember him being introduced in the Draft with a #33 jersey but switched to 32 before the beginning of the season. I finally had to go to the Wiki page for Terry Catledge to find it: "In 1992, while a member of the Magic, Catledge refused to give up his jersey number #33 so that new teammate Shaquille O'Neal, who at LSU also wore the same number, could wear it. In the end, O'Neal settled with #32." Maybe this could be added? Merrrlo (talk) 09:19, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Cavs Trade

Shaq was traded for Pavlovic, Wallace and a second round pick in 2009 draft, not 2010. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.227.215.155 (talk) 13:00, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Mistake

It is listed that Shaq and the Magic beat Jordan's Bulls, but The Houston Rocket's two championships came while Jordan was "retired" after the death of his dad (That is also the time that jordan was playing baseball as referenced in the movie Space Jam). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.201.95.97 (talk) 10:15, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

No, the text is correct. Jordan came back in the middle of the 1994-95 season. In the 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Bulls lost to Shaq and the Magic. Zagalejo^^^ 18:47, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Shaquille O'Neal is not an Undergraduate member of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated.

Brother Shaquille O'Neal is a member Of Omega Psi Phi fraternity incorporated in good standing. He was born into Omega Psi Phi in the 12th district (the state of california). He was read in as a professioanl Athelete currently working for the Los Angeles Lakers at the time. The Louisiana State University is in the ninth district and has no record of him available. He was "read in" with other "Famous men" as a Tail Dawg( tallest man on line). His year and line number are correct. It should be correctly noted that he is a graduate member who joined our wonderfull organization as an adult, not a child. For the brothers who did join and in some cases die(Large numbers of brothers are ROTC-and die in wars-navy-army and marines- upon graduating but before joining graduate chapters.)He is not a member who pays any sort of dues in the ninth district. He is a member from California.

Edit request from Anon, 10 June 2010

{{editsemiprotected}} It is "impossible" for Shaq to be 4.5% 3P shooting for his career when he only attempted 3P shots during one season in which he was 50% (.500) on. Someone needs to research this and fix either: #1. The percentages for the seasons, or #2. The career percentage. I think maybe the formula used to determine career percentages does not take into account seasons with no 3 point shots attempted which should not factor in as 0%. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.105.250.23 (talk) 01:58, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Actually I did some research, he took about 20 or so in his career, however he only made the 1 that season (1 for 2 that year) and was like 0 for 18 the other seasons which would put him around 5% so the statistic appears to be correct. The edit is not needed.70.105.250.23 (talk) 02:07, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

He Was a Military Kid but the Article Doesn't Mention it

Did he move a lot growing up? A lot of military kids did move quite a lot growing up. I notice part of his childhood was in Newark NJ, but what happened after that period? It says he went to a San Antonio Texas High School. There were probably a lot of military bases that he lived at in between those places.

His early life section should be filled out to show the military aspect too. A lot of us grew up that way, but nobody recognizes it. The military childhood is always so invisible, but it shouldn't be like that.

Shaq is listed in the "Famous military brats" ("Military brat" is not an insult-- it's a term of affection in the military) section of the Military brat (U.S. subculture) article.

Edit request - Acting Section

In the acting subsection of the off-court section it mentions he has voiced himself in several productions - then lists the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny as one of those. This is false, the Ultimate Showdown is just a goofy internet flash movie that has no voices aside from the singer of the song, while humorous it is hardly worth mentioning in a Shaq article. The article does mention the degree (in the "Education" section). But I don't think we need to change the first sentence to reflect that. It doesn't seem to be a common practice to mention such degrees in that manner. See Harold Bloom, to pick a random example. Zagalejo^^^ 05:34, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Masonic Affiliation

I have "undone" the "undo" of my previous edit, and added a source to confirm his Masonic affiliation. And if you're wondering...yes, the "Freemasons for Dummies" blog should be considered a credible source. Or more importantly, the owner of the blog Christopher Hodapp should be considered a credible source.

As to the claim that it's "not notable except as trivia," the section it appears in is "Personal Life." It's not any less notable than any other part of his personal life...unless you believe a professional athlete's former girlfriend and his religion are somehow more notable. I'd be interested to hear the reasoning behind that. There are a lot of biographies on this site that include Masonic affiliation, I don't see why Mr. O'Neal's biography should be any different. It's an important part of his public life.Gotham77 (talk) 18:51, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

His girlfriends are at least covered by multiple independent reliable sources, while his Masonic affiliation does not appear to be. Three sentences on one trivial detail, based on amount of coverage, seems WP:UNDUE. I would say remove, or alternatively one brief sentence at best.—Bagumba (talk) 19:49, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Let me ask you guys this, would it be ok to replace "O'Neal became a Freemason" with "O'Neal became a member of the Prince Hall Freemasonry" to clarify the exact sect of Freemasonry that he is a member of. IMHO simply putting that he is a freemason would be confusing. I understand that the majority of African Americans join the Prince Hall lodge but that is not to say that in UGLE sanctioned i.e. mainstream Grand Lodges there are not any non-Caucasians because actually there are. Is what I'm saying make sense? Should and is it ok to change this minor wording. Please LMK. TheGoofyGolfer (talk) 04:55, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Further Reading Section

This section listed two of his books so I added his other books. I'm not sure why his books are listed here, since "further reading" does not convey that these are his books. It seems to me that his 5 published works/autobiographies would be at least as significant or relevant as his law enforcement activities, and could possibly be included in the "off court" section of the article. Just a thought! --Applespeachespumpkinpie (talk) 06:07, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I was wondering about that section myself. At the least, it could use a different section header. Zagalejo^^^ 00:14, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

The following lines are unnecessary:

O'Neal remains estranged from his biological father; he and Toney have never spoken, and O'Neal has expressed no interest in establishing a relationship.[8] On his 1994 rap album, Shaq Fu: The Return, O'Neal voiced his feelings of disdain for Toney in the song "Biological Didn't Bother", dismissing him with the line "Phil is my father."

I'm sure why the entire first body paragraph of an awesome guy's Wiki is quite sad to read...

Oops, my mistake

Ok, sorry, I had to correct myself.

I imagined I had come across the NBA-guide which said O'Neal was a 12-time all-star (instead of 15 times). So I checked basketball-reference.com. O'Neal was an all-star in the following years: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009. He did not play due to injury 1997 and 2001. This makes 13 times.

Instead of "He ranks 7th all-time in points scored..." the article should state "He ranks 8th all-time in points scored...".

Clicking on the link leads you to the all time scorer list. Note that Lebron James has passed Shaq for 7th place on the all time scorers list. Shaq is listed as 8th all time in scoring. Happytreefarmer (talk) 18:02, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

He was in 2 episodes of Fresh Off the Boat. The below bullet should be right before "Off to School."
