No mention of recent events

[edit]

Needs a mention of the 2005 attacks under history. Also, the climate of the city should be filed under "climate." I'm going to go ahead and make these changes if no one minds.--Aeranis 01:46, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I corrected the population. It was written that there was 20.000 people there. That is very innacurate. Only the ones that work in the luxury hotels are much more. The arabic version mentioned 843.1067, what seems to be much closer to the reality. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.96.232.114 (talk) 23:16, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia standards, where art thou?

[edit]

"Il Mercato The latest sensation in Sharm el Sheikh, Il Mercato has come to add pizzazz to Sinai, exclusively bringing in the biggest international brands of apparel, ..." - come on... this article is neither "B-Class", nor "High-importance". Some sections require serious cleanup. ThE6HU7A (talk) 22:25, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have a good point

[edit]
  • I removed what was an obvious commercial paragraph added recently. It's my first edit on Wikipedia, but I do some wiki editing at work. I will try to come back as this page looks like a good project to get started on editing a page and there is some stuff of which I'm aware that is not on this page. (Sharm may be the west terminus for causeway connecting Egypt and Saudi Arabia.)

Population

[edit]

What is the population? There must be something wrong in the box. Calle Widmann (talk) 12:01, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why "beard of sheikh"?

[edit]

"sharm" in arabic means a bay - according to al mawrid dictionary. definitely not a beard. correct: the bay of the sheikh. 193.174.83.97 (talk) 10:42, 16 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

The listed pronunciation, [ˈʃɑɾˤm eʃˈʃeːx], is Arabic. Nobody who speaks English, except for the occasional Arabist, is interested in the fact that ل is followed by the sun letter ش. We pronounce the el as "el". Can we have an English alternative listed first please? Varlaam (talk) 19:29, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Effect of the recent turmoil in Egypt

[edit]

Seems to be no mention on how all the current serious problems in Egypt have affected Sharm, its tourist buissness and the livelihoods of the people who work there.141.6.11.14 (talk) 09:47, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We are writing an encyclopedia not a newspaper and we try not to follow current events in detail.--Charles (talk) 13:34, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the name Sharm ash Shaykh not mentioned in the article at all?

[edit]

Why does this map mark the town as Sharm ash Shaykh (link), yet the article doesn't mention this alternative name?--Adûnâi (talk) 00:28, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Naming

[edit]

Last year the article title was moved from Sharm El Sheikh to Sharm el-Sheikh, and in July this year it was moved back again. Both moves were made without any discussion, so far as I can see. Does anyone have an opinion on how it should be titled, and why? Colonies Chris (talk) 14:19, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to draw more attention to this question. Does anyone have an answer?
