Did the torpedo from the 184 sink the ship?[edit]

Hi MilborneOne

I have come across a reference claiming that the ship was actually sunk by a torpedo, but not from the 184 but from a submarine in the area at the same time. Have a look at the reference in Short Brothers and see what you think. TraceyR 00:55, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The German wiki site goes into more detail: apparently the submarine was HMS E14 (odd name?) and had alreay attacked the Turkish ship, causing it to run aground. The Naval Museum in Yeovil (?) might have more infomation. TraceyR 01:36, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the wording to remove the fact it sank the ship as you are right, please refer to the article on the mother ship HMS Ben-my-Chree. It still was the first torpedo attack.MilborneOne 20:05, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not so fast!! There is no reference on the HMS Ben-my-Chree article to any independent verification. I think that this one will run and run until the record assigning the "kill" to the one or the other is referenced. In terms of numbers of Google hits, the S.184 has it, but that is no basis for attributing it definitively. The German Wiki entry for the S.184 is more detailed than the English one but is very poor on references. I'm also not convinced that it was the first torpedo attack, but that's another story! Yes, that is clear. I'm just amazed at the number of places on the web where the "kill" is claimed for the S.184 - there are so many to cite but so far I haven't come across anything definitive.
