Quote

[edit]

"A game is a series of interesting choices" keeps being attributed to Meier, but it's apparently something he just said once. It was never meant to be quoted everywhere like a game design rule. Might want to research this and find the original quote (if its origin is still known anyway).

It's referenced in Soren Johnson's Afterwords to the Civ 4 manual

At a higher level, these increased player choices – or as Sid would put it, “interesting decisions” – are a theme which can be found throughout Civ IV.

Make of that what you will.

Answer to: Does anyone know if he has any family that works in the industry?

[edit]

Well his wife, Susan Meier, works with him at Firaxis. But other familiy members, I dont know yet. InGenX

Notable Contributions

[edit]

Are we going to include games on this page that he has contributed significantly to, but not recoginised as actually on the dev team. For example for the game XCOM:Enemy Unkown which was released today in the US, he is mentioned many times by the official developers as being a large guiding influence upon game development. Anyones opinions on weather stuff like this should be included? thanks in advance -- Turbo566 talk 15:15, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading list of games

[edit]

The list of games should be split in two lists:
A list in which Sid Meier was an active part of the team and core developer (e.g. Sid Meier's Civilization 1, Pirates)
A list in which his name was stamped on for marketing purposes (e.g. Sid Meier's Civilization 2, Alpha Centauri)
Right now it is as misleading as would be adding "Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast" (1991) to a list of films created by Walt Disney (who died 1966).
This article should cover the person, not the IP. Or at least make it clear who/which is meant.

Sid Meier's parents..

[edit]

..were both immigrants from Europe. His Father from Switzerland and his mother from Holland. The article incorrectly states that both parents are from Holland.

I'd love to correct this myself, but I really do not know how.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.72.53.234 (talk) 21:33, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Citizenship

[edit]

AFAIK Meier has been a US resident for many years, started MicroProse in the US, and also became a US citizen many years ago. I haven't been able to find much online, but surely there are good sources that someone may know about that covers these details? DoktorDestructo (talk) 15:02, 6 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Change title from "Computer Programmer" to "Game Developer" at the top?

[edit]

Calling him a computer programmer adds repetition to the lead, and doesn't reflect the full scope of his work. Thoughts on changing this? Maybe a better term than game developer? TimeMerchant (talk) 02:38, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
