In The Once and Future King

[edit]

In The Once and Future King, by T.H. White, Merlyn is trying to explain the rights and wrongs of war to the young King Arthur and his brother Sir Kay, as King Lot, Queen Morgause and their sons are camped on the northern borders, "I recollect that I was a fervrent pacifist myself once, in the Boer War, when my country was the aggressor, and a young woman blew a squeaker a me on Mafefing Night." (Fontana Paperback edition Fifth printing August 1990, p. 230) It appears to be one of many references to the Baden-Powells. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.71.178.30 (talk) 14:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you keep reverting my edits? My great-grandfather was at the siege and left the family a huge amount of important information when he died from a pulmonary embolism. His diary provides a fascinating insight into the town's condition during the siege, but just because he was not alive in the internet age, you all seem to seek to dismiss his first hand account. If we are to build a definitive story of the Boer War I think his voice should be heard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.149.238.224 (talk) 22:54, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If your great-grandfather's diary is available for others to read somewhere, then it can be used as a proper source. If it is not, it can not be used as a source. Material in wikipedia has to be sourced. Please read our policies and guidelines on sourcing. --Bduke (Discussion) 23:21, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Often soldiers were asked to dress as women undertaking normal activities such as fetching water and sewing to disillusion the enemy."

What does that mean? --Dweller (talk) 10:34, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Additions & sourcing

[edit]

I am not sure that the tone and content of the additions are a fair reflection of the source material; certainly Jeal does not support some of the content (e.g. Jeal says he was authorised to move his regiment to Mafeking) --Errant (chat!) 11:59, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Redundancies in text need to be consolidated

[edit]

Someone should take a look at the paragraph that contains this sentence:

"Many of Baden-Powell's recruits were untrained..."

This phrase is repeated twice, as well the point about recruiting in secret. Repetition of information isn't bad, except when it's repeated word for word, and so close to the first mention as well. Deliusfan (talk) 16:34, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
