Singh and Kaur[edit]

The point?[edit]

This list has increasingly become a "please add your name here" list and it's a bit pointless. If we were to list all possible 'Sikh' names, the list would be huge. I think we should concentrate on the significance of Singh and Kaur, not just everyone's first names. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:04, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sikh last names or their family names especially among Jat Sikhs are the last names their ancestors had inherited through generations. There are some villages whose names are based on Sikh last names, for example Boparai Kalan's name is derived from the surname ( got or gotra ) Boparai. There has been a trend started probably in twentieth century when some known Sikh personalties, mostly politicians have adopted their village name aas their surname. Late chief minister of Punjab Partap Singh Kairon used his ancestral vllage KaironCite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).</ref> name as his last name Surjit Singh Barnala, who was born Surjit Singh Dhaliwal is another example of this kind of adoption of last name ( based on one's village or town's name ).
