Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Silent barter be merged into Silent trade . I think that the content in the Silent barter article can easily be explained in the context of Silent trade , and the Silent trade article is of a reasonable size in which the merging of Silent barter will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. Fair use rationale for Image:Pyat rublei 1997.jpg[edit]

Image:Pyat rublei 1997.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. The silent trade is a myth[edit]

I don't feel like entirely rewriting this page at the moment, but in case someone else does, Pablo de Moraes Farias demonstrated back in 1974 that the silent trade is a historical myth: [1]. According to Farias, most accounts of "silent trade" are either repetitions of vague accounts going back to ancient times, or descriptions of trade conducted through a broker misinterpreted through the lens of "silent trade". More recent work generally seems to agree with Farias: [2] [3]. Let's try to make Wikipedia be more accurate than Herodotus here. Ornithopsis (talk) 15:50, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's vague in geographic details and vague in Herodotus's sources for his information. But that's not the point: the point is that Farias has argued that silent trade is a myth, and this view seems to have been widely accepted. This article needs to be significantly reworked to take into account the widespread academic skepticism of the idea of silent trade. Ornithopsis (talk) 05:12, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
