Proposal for moving article

I am nominating the Silicon Valley of India article to be moved to High technology industries of Bangalore for these reasons:

• "Silicon Valley of India" is said to refer to the city of Bangalore itself (so it is different from the original Silicon Valley (which, bizarrely, the article does not link to or even mention) or areas such as Silicon Fen, which are unique names referring to the regions which are not identifiable as a grouped area in any other way). The phrase is also different from Big Apple, New York's nickname, as "Big Apple" is unique and has its own original history of creation. "Silicon Valley of India" has simply been coined to compare Bangalore to Silicon Valley, California. There is some (currently poorly formatted) specific history about the development of Bangalore high-tech industries which I think should go into an article entitled High technology industries of Bangalore. Mentioning the Silicon Valley of India nickname in the article is fine, I'm just not sure how it belongs as the name of its own article since its not a uniquely created name but a comparison, and it apparently just describes Bangalore. And certainly Silicon Valley, California should be linked! — Bwithh 23:17, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Note that I am not saying that this article should be deleted or merged into another article. I am saying that it should be renamed. If the more specific nickname for the area (that is not just the city of Bangalore) is Electronic City, then that's totally fine with me. If "Electronic City" just describes Bangalore also, then I think that fact should be in the Bangalore article and a new High technology industries of Bangalore article. Electronic City and Silicon Valley of India should be redirects Bwithh 14:48, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Discussion

When I created this article, I meant for it to be a be a synopsis of why Bangalore is called the "Silicon Valley of India". It was meant more to trace the origin of that moniker and not necessarily talk only about Bangalore's IT Industry. See "The Big Apple" for a clearer understanding of what my intentions were. At this point, I consider this article to be a work-in-progress. I just haven't had much time to contribute to Wikipedia these last couple of months, but hopefully I should be able to work on that article sooner than later. In short, I'll oppose the move. It would probably help if you provided some sources or some quotes showing that people in India (or even better, outside India) are actually referring to Bangalore as the "Silicon Valley of India." But since that will take time, for now I'm expressing my position on the suggested move as neutral.--Coolcaesar 16:49, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

I suggested in the original nomination that "Silicon Valley of India" does not have the same uniqueness or geographic naming function as "The Big Apple" - that was one of my direct comparative examples. My argument is the "nickname" (it's not clear to me that it is one - and "Electronics City" seems to have a stronger arfument in being a more original, indigenous term) term is merely comparative. Also, shouldn't a direct mention of, and link to, the original Silicon Valley be in the article from the start? That doesn't take any time and its the most obvious thing, but is currently totally absent. Bwithh 18:04, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

First, "Electronics City" is not a moniker of Bangalore. Electronics City is an enclave within Bangalore that has many IT companies in it. Electronics City does not equal Bangalore. I don't argue that there should be a mention of the original Silicon Valley, since Bangalore's sobrequet is quite obviously adapted from the original Silicon Valley. In fact, that was the whole point of my argument. I say no to deleting (moving) the page, but I do say yes to deleting (or at least completely revamping) its contents. Hope this helps. Second, I don't think it will take me a whole lot of time to dig up sources that refer to Bangalore as the Silicon Valley of India; certainly from an Indian media standpoint, the use of that term is widespread. Merge

This article should be merged because unlike the Silicon Valley of California it applies to an entire city instead of just a small region. It specifically has to do with the economy of Bangalore so it should be merged there.--Jorfer 02:43, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Object You are not saying anything that hasn't already been discussed and unequivocally shot down during the previous debate. If you read the article, it discusses how the actual nickname and how that came about. By your logic, The Big Apple should be merged with New York City, New York and the Windy City should be merged with Chicago since the nicknames apply to entire cities and not to particular regions.
