Related to the Mermaids docufiction specials?

Anyone else noticed the similarities of the creatures to those in the 2012 and 2013 docufiction specials Mermaids: The Body Found and Mermaids: The New Evidence?

Is it possible that those specials somehow sparked the idea behind this series?

Just curious. 2600:8800:785:1300:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 08:03, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Mermaid names

I think the names of the mermaids should be at the very least put in quotes, since they're not their actual names, Ryn just chooses hers after hearing it on TV, and Donna is just the name of the nurse Ryn's sister stole a badge from. I don't even know where the names "Levi" and "Katrina" came from, those characters weren't named during the episodes. It's telling that the mermaids never call each other by those names, they only use them (mostly Ryn) to refer to themselves while talking to humans. Seems implied their real names can't be pronounced in human form. Kumagoro-42 (talk) 07:25, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Quotes around the names would be really out of place. Otherwise, every pseudonym would have to be put in quotes (examples: Spock, see Memory Alpha, or Superman / Clark Kent, or even stage names like Eline Powell). As for the names of Levi and Katrina:
  • Levi gets his name (together with most of the others) when the fake ID cards are produced (in "Oil and Water", ca. 06:20): Jerry has been „running a bit low on inspiration towards the end“, and, looking at the label on the merman’s pair of jeans, decides to call him Levi.
  • Katrina is named by Xander, after Hurricane Katrina, when he has captured her on his boat (also in "Oil and Water", ca. 18:50).
The merpeople might often not even use names, but prefer relationships. (Ryn refers to Cami as „sister’s daughter“ in many instances, e.g.; also see this blog post about (human) names in general.)
