Confusion

[edit]

"Sit-ins were first widely employed by Mohandas Gandhi in South African strikes."

Are you sure?--[[Special:Contributionto 1906 protests in South Africa, but it is entirely possible that sit-ins did occur, yet the expression wasn't used until later. More research on this wouldn't hurt. Richard Myers (talk) 05:53, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the usual expression related to a strike is not sit-in, but rather, sit-down. Richard Myers (talk) 05:57, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gandhi, sit-ins in South Africa?

[edit]

The first sentence of the "History" section reads: "Sit-ins were first widely employed by Mohandas Gandhi in South African strikes." Is that correct? I know he used various forms of non-cooperation, but I'm not aware of any sit-ins. What is the source for that? Brucehartford (talk) 17:48, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Great First Sit-In Debate

[edit]

As a Baltimore resident I've been trying to spread information about Read's Drug Store, the site of a 1955 sit-in that prompted the rapid desegregation of 37 stores. It's definitely a landmark... however, the further back you go: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/99999999/NEWS08/50113004 ... so it's really hard to actually designate a first. Peace&Love Groupuscule (talk) 18:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See Read's Drug Store article. This needs to be added to the article too. • SbmeirowTalk07:20, 15 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another person added it to the article. Done. • SbmeirowTalk14:22, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Globalise tempate?

[edit]

Do you think this article needs a globalisation or similar template? Most of the article (especially the History section) focuses solely on the United States and the civil rights movements that occurred there in the mid 20th century.
