Main characters versus recurring characters per season

[edit]

To better define main characters and recurring characters per season, I have listed the number of episodes, where the characters are listed as a main character (eg on the first slide in the credits of the episode):

Season 1: Eva: 11, Isak: 11, Jonas: 10, Noora: 10, Vilde: 9, Chris: 7, Sana: 7, Evas mor: 2, Iben: 2, Ingrid: 1, Maria: 1, Christoffer: 1, William: 1, Elias: 1, Lege: 1.

Season 2: Noora: 12, Sana: 12, Vilde: 12, Eva: 12, Chris: 12, William: 9, Nicolai: 2, Mari: 2, Kasper: 1, Christoffer: 1, Eskild: 1.

Season 3: Isak: 10, Even: 9, Jonas: 8, Emma: 5, Sana: 4, Noora: 3, Eskild: 3, Magnus: 2, Mahdi: 2, Vilde: 2, Eva: 1, Chris: 1.

As a main character have to play a significant role in most episodes, it seems obvious to define season 1 main characters as Eva, Isak, Jonas, Noora, Vilde, Chris and Sana, and season 2 main characters as Noora, Sana, Vilde, Eva, Chris and William. For season 3, we could argue that only Isak, Even and Jonas are main characters, as they are the only ones that have a significant role in more than half of the episodes. We could also expand the list to include Emma, Sana, Noora and Eskild, so the main character ensemble is of the same size and in the other seasons. For now, I will go with the first solution, but please discuss, if you have arguments regarding this. Pardy (talk) 16:04, 2 January 2017 (UTC).[reply]

@Pardy: while I agree it is difficult to decipher who is a main character vs. recurring, it is not for us to decide -- per policy. This seems like a simple case of original research, whereby you have determined who is a main character by your logic -- not by sources. Irrespective of whether I agree with you or not, it should not be done like this. My suggestion would be to remove "main" and "recurring" distinguishes, and merge them all into one -- until we are certain which category everybody fits in. —MelbourneStartalk 07:06, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@MelbourneStar: Thanks for your answer. On the official site (https://tv.nrk.no/serie/skam) there is only one person mentioned and pictured as a main character on "season level", so I guess this means according to the policy, that only this person should be listed as a main character for the season. I will update the table to be alligned with this. Pardy (talk) 13:52, 3 January 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Broadcast, Reception, Geoblocking

[edit]

@LocalNet: I originally modified the Broadcast section to follow the format used in many (but obviously not all) internationally distributed TV-series. If the exact dates are too much information, could use moths (or years) only.

The reception section would benefit from some subheadings in my opinion. At least viewer figures, cultural influence, geoblocking etc. Also I feel that "worldwide" is better than "foreign" - as other Nordic countries are strictly speaking foreign, too. Or maybe "international"?

As for the right place for geoblocking: I do not have a very strong opinion, but while it followed from the international success, it is a distribution issue fundamentally. Actually, it might be worth considering renaming "Broadcast" to "Distribution", as the airing format of the show is not entirely conventional.

Hi @Skhedion: Could I get some examples on other shows following the format featuring dates of season premieres in other countries? To me, it seemed like way too much information, but I might be wrong. And I do agree that renaming "Foreign success" would be an improvement, and I prefer "International success" rather than "Worldwide success". Regarding the geoblocking issue, I think the paragraph is entirely context-dependent. It was never intentioned to become such a big success outside of Norway, so it wasn't an actual deliberate distribution attempt, but rather a result of its international reception. And regarding subheadings, I'm unsure on how to properly separate the content into different subtopics. LocalNet (talk) 14:16, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @LocalNet: I meant the general format for broadcast in other countries (bulleted lists). Not sure how common season premier dates are, but for example Vera_(TV_series)#International_broadcast has some. Also, the "Several European countries" seems, in fact, only be Nordic ones, so I removed that separate mention. I agree with you on the context-dependency of the geoblocking issue as such, but it would still seem "fair" to mention it under broadcast (as this limits the "legitimate" audience from what it was before geoblocking). Of course the international success didn't follow from a deliberate distribution attempt, but geoblocking is a deliberate attempt to limit the distribution... But indeed, perhaps moving the paragraph alone was not a good idea - would need further revision. The subheadings may need further thinking but naming the first part "Norway and Nordic countries" and second one "International success" would be a start; the first section is not really a lead for the "foreign" part, so a subheading would make the structure more logical. Skhedion (talk) 14:38, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Skhedion: Hmmm. I have mixed opinions on broadcasting in other countries. I think mentioning season premiere dates is too much information, and because of that, I'm not actually sure there is anything a bulleted list could give that the current prose style doesn't? I'm not against a bulleted list, I'm just not sure it would be an improvement over prose. But I agree that the words "several European countries" can be removed. I also agree that one subheading specifically for "Norway and Nordic countries" is appropriate in the Reception section. And yes, I also think that we would need to make further contextual paragraphs to add geoblocking in Broadcast. Not against that either, but I want to make sure the context explains that it happened because of its international popularity rather than that being the initial attempt. It looks like we agree on removal of "several European countries" and adding a "Norway and Nordic countries" subheading in Reception, though, so we can make that change :) Do you want to do it? You made the initial bold edit, so you can make this edit if you want :) LocalNet (talk) 14:58, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@LocalNet: I'll look into this tomorrow. God knows what would happen if I tried to edit with my phone... If you think the changes should be done as soon as possible, please go ahead. Skhedion (talk) 16:45, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Haha @Skhedion: I can understand that. I made the changes now :) LocalNet (talk) 18:34, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LocalNet: All right, I went through a number of wiki articles on TV series, and to my dismay must conclude that no standard approach to the Broadcasting issue exists. Choices range from only listing the broadcasting countries to giving very detailed information including dates and even emission times. I'd suggest the following for now: (1) Rename "Broadcasting" to "Distribution", as the distribution channels go beyond traditional TV. This would also reference to geoblocking more naturally, and possible inclusion of other distribution media, if such ever is produced; (2) Return partly to my yesterday's edit, with a bullet list including distribution channels. I think this would add clarity and the information under "Reception" can be subsequently made more concise. For dates, a compromise listing the month of first launch (Dec 2016). This information is relevant showing the timing of official distribution channels (late compared to what happened through internet, especially in Denmark) but also that it is not related to geoblocking (which happened later). (3) For geoblocking, and general organisation such as inclusion of some distribution format information would be useful here, but require more extensive rewriting and thinking for which I don't have time right now, so shall come back to this later. Skhedion (talk) 08:39, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Skhedion: You make good points, and I agree to renaming "Broadcast" to "Distribution", as this is, as you say, beyond traditional TV, and the renaming opens up more possibilities. I also agree to the compromise on adding months of first launches in Nordic countries in a bulleted list. :) Don't want to cause unnecessary edit conflicts, so let me know if you have the opportunity to add/edit info or if I should do it :) LocalNet (talk) 08:46, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@LocalNet: I did the easy changes (1) & (2) now. To the others I may come back with better time. Skhedion (talk) 11:21, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Skhedion: Thanks! :) LocalNet (talk) 11:27, 13 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
