Founding[edit]

Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, whose main intention was to develop a piece of software which would revolutionize telephone calls. Allowing users to speak to each other via computers promotes the use of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and the use of computers in the technologically advancing world. Users are able to talk for free, an incentive to future and present members.

I removed the above text which is not cited and not neutral POV.

Some replacement content that provided the context for the founding of the company would improve the article. Pnm (talk) 07:10, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

# of users?[edit]

The floating text says "As of 2010, Skype is available in 27 languages and has 100 million worldwide users." (cited) whereas the info box is saying "521 million (Oct. 2009)[1]" (also cited)

Whats the correct number of users now? I mean, there is a HUGE difference between having 100 or 500 million users.. Toben (talk) 12:35, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An approximate count of users over the years from inception to the current year would be useful for historical purposes. 203.13.3.90 (talk) 01:47, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please read sources[edit]

Another case (similar to Talk:Skype) where it would be helpful if people would read the sources they are citing, many of which make it clear Microsoft hasn't actually purchased Skype, just agreed to and the deal, as with any deal of the type is subject to regulatory approval etc which even if they aren't likely to be a problem do mean we have to be careful with our wording. It's particularly a problem when we rename our article to something which doesn't even exist yet (Microsoft Skype division) Nil Einne (talk) 10:06, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The deal has not closed yet? 65.166.89.2 (talk) 14:10, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's now closed Source ♠♠ BanëJ ♠♠ (Talk) 04:25, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Skype's terms of service here names the company is Skype Software Sàrl, Skype Communications Sàrl, or Skype, Inc. The domain registration for skype.com here lists the owner as Skype Technologies S.A. The notion that the company has been turned into a Microsoft division, rather than simply acquired, seems to be based on hearsay. --Stybn (talk) 21:20, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Can someone please add the logos section? Also, can I use File:Skype Logo.png in place of the other one because it is the corporate logo?

¿Does the company still exist?[edit]

During Microsoft's recent re-organization they've turned things around around, but there seems to be an inconsistency about this here in/on Wikipedia. As one might note HERE that "Microsoft" is now the official owner of Skype, while here the notice bellow says "© 2015 Skype and/or Microsoft." so it might still be Skype Technologies, but I've seen Skype applications been installed different, for example the Facebook's video-messaging plug-in notes "Skype Technologies S.A." while the Skype plug-in for Outlook.com notes "Microsoft Skype Division", and the mobile applications and P.C. (WinR.T.) applications simply note "Skype", while the Skype desktop application (Win32) notes "Skype Software Sarl". According to the Wikipedia page Microsoft Product Divisions notes that "This product before the reorganization was in the Microsoft Skype Division." while the Skype page notes Skype Technologies S.A. as the owner. It's not clear whether Skype has become a mere Microsoft product, or is still a legal body apart from the product. Sincerely, --Namlong618 (talk) 20:44, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

According to http://www.skype.com/en/about "Skype is a division of Microsoft Corp". The full name of the legal entity, per the same page, is Skype Communications SARL, headquartered in Luxembourg. To me, that means the company still exists. Regards, Indrek (talk) 22:47, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.

Skype sarl?[edit]

Skype's legal status needs to be discussed more on the main Skype article, including the status of its software as being under democratic (US) ownership or under non-democratic ownership (SARL). -Inowen (nlfte) 21:36, 21 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
