Discussion: "Ethnic Studies" -- Of Whom and for Whom

[edit]

The title above is a paraphrase of a title of an essay written by Rose Mary Prosen. She was talking about literature, because she was a poetess, but the same question can be asked in relation to ethnic (academic, or not) studies of and for - whom already? Let me explain what I have in mind by a Venn diagrams concept. There are two small sets. On one hand there is a small ethnic group itself, and on the other yet smaller English speaking students of this particular ethnic group. The intersection is something one needs a microscope for to find the secondary sources about it. Why? Because the ethnic group's media do not see it as "news worthy" because they think that foreign students can hardly tell them anything new about their culture they didn't know already, AND on the other hand, the English speaking media could hardly care less about some small ethnic group at all, let alone boring (academic, or not) studies about it.
