Sensimania / sensimilla?[edit]

I'm sure he says "sensimania" on the record ("Police Officer") even if "sensimilla" is the more accepted form normally. MFlet1 22:01, 21 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I used to think that too, but the more you listen, the more it sounds like it's a parody of the copper's cockny accent. It's to rhyme with 'neither', phonetically 'neevah', if you see what I mean. Pollythewasp (talk) 09:31, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • If you look up the lyrics of the song on the internet it almost always says "sensimania", though admittedly lyrics on the internet are not always accurate. MFlet1 (talk) 09:05, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Blatant copy violation[edit]

The whole article is a copy and paste job. WillE 17:36, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I wrote about 90% of this article, so I'd be grateful if you could elaborate on where I supposedly copied it from. MFlet1 17:01, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

@MFlet1 - well done for writing this, I hope you don't mind if I query a couple of things. I thought the single was called "Cockney Translator" rather than translation, but I could well be wrong.

Also, I take a different meaning from Police Officer. He mentioned "producer" a slang term used when served with a document when stopped while driving requiring the driver to produce their driving documents (licence, insurance & MOT) at a police station within 7 days. When he says he is Smiley Culture, the policeman recognises him, says his kids loved the record and asks for an autograph. Smiley duly signs, but the piece of paper is the "producer". He was conned and I recall that the last line was "arrest me and take me ganja". So all in all, despite his fame he was tricked by the police. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.137.96.26 (talk) 21:28, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

the last line is "them never lie, them never bother arrest me or take my ganja".--Michig (talk) 07:38, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed one or two obits in newspapers that are, shall we say, 'somewhat similar' to this article, but I should point out that I did a lot of editing on this on the 15th before these obits were published, so if anyone notices similarities, please bear this in mind. It was "Cockney Translation" btw - if you search on Google Images you can see the single sleeve.--Michig (talk) 22:05, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes - "Cockney Translator" is what the police officer mistakenly calls it in "Police Officer". MFlet1 (talk) 08:57, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Origin[edit]

HE WASN'T BLOODY ENGLISH!!!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.245.168.34 (talk) 08:31, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Course he was, he was from London. Pollythewasp (talk) 09:31, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How he died[edit]

If no-one objects soon, I'm going to add an 'allegedly' to "On 15 March 2011, Emmanuel died from self-inflicted stab wounds during a police raid on his house ": I'm not suggesting wrongdoing, it's just that, in my opinion, in an encyclopedia, we shouldn't assume the mode of death until the post mortem is complete. Pollythewasp (talk) 09:36, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree - in fact I notice various categories such as "Musicians who committed suicide" have already been added, when arguably these should be removed until the facts have been established. MFlet1 (talk) 09:00, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I also agree and will remove the refs to suicide John Eden (talk) 09:26, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gold and diamond mining[edit]

I would love the gold/diamond mining story to be true - but the Guardian reporter who wrote it didn't check it - and a few days after the story was published, Smiley was arrested for allegedly drug dealing. I personally know the family of a former drug dealer - and he had lied to them about where his money was coming from with a similar sort of cover story. I do not think that the story should, at this time, be shown as fact in the article. Very sorry to say that. New Thought (talk) 17:27, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've edited it accordingly.--Michig (talk) 17:46, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The family are of the opinion that he "was a successful international businessman trading gold, diamonds and other commodities, and was worth millions"

http://leejasper.blogspot.com/2011/03/press-release-and-official-statement.html?spref=tw Furthermore he has not been convicted of "drug dealing", so I think the presumption of innocence is relevant. That's a good edit, though Michig!John Eden (talk) 19:02, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
