Article needs work - October 2012[edit]

Under "Urban Commons," it states: "Almost immediately, nudists, many of whom live in the area, began congregating there." What does "in the area" mean? It suggests that the "nudists" congregating in the Castro neighborhood live in or near the Castro neighborhood. I think that sentence needs to be deleted because it is misleading, vague and not substantiated. I question referring to the naked men congregating in the Castro neighborhood as "nudists." I think they are better called "activists for social nudity." Linking them with "nudists" in the general sense of the word links two groups who do not necessarily share the same values and aims. "Nudists" suggests a group of men and women of all ages who choose to be nude among each other in designated nudists areas which is very different from the individuals pushing for social nudity in San Francisco. I suggest re-wording this sentence to read: "Almost immediately, activists for social nudity, began congregating there." I also think it should be stated the said activists are overwhelmingly male and Caucasion, but I don't how to substantiate this except that it's obvious to anyone in the Castro neighborhood.

The article then states that "nudity is absolutely non-sexualized or "vanilla" at the Folsom Street Fair. There are men all over the Folsom Street Fair masturbating for the crowds. This statement should be deleted.

Finally, this article says nothing about the people in San Francisco who are against public nudity. In particular, there are many people who live in and near the Castro neighborhood (and this can be substantiated by the SF Police Department records and speaking with the designated Board of Supervisor member for the Castro neighborhood, Scott Weiner) that do not want their neighborhood overrun with naked men. Their viewpoint is completely missing from this article.

I would add this paragraph to the end of the article: "There are those in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood who (1) believe the aforementioned activists for social nudity have disregarded the rights of the Castro neighborhood to establish for itself accepted standards of behavior, and (2) believe the same activists have unduly altered the social/cultural and economic status of the Castro community without regard to the greater Castro community, and (2) belive that this social experiment, however well-intended by some of its architects, has regrettably attracted individuals to the Castro neighborhood who, under the guise of social nudity, use the Castro community as a non-consentual partner in sexual interactions." As with any Wikipedia Article, Be Bold, but also use reliable sources. The current article is very poorly referenced, so any improvement would be welcome. If you can find the references, but don't know how to incorporate them, just ask for help. --Arg342 (talk) 00:23, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The push for body acceptance and body freedom is in no way sexual or prurient. Nudists believe that shame, fear, and the view that the human body is always sexual or obscene are ideas which are social constructed and learned, just like any other prejudice or bigotry. Simple, healthy, social nudity harms no one.
Passages like this are why I'm adding a POV tag. I would suggest to Goldrushguy that he not add anything to the article that cannot be referenced by a reliable source, as a lot of what he has said appears to be derived from personal experience and/or opinion. --92.16.54.65 (talk) 20:26, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Merge into main article[edit]

Since I agree with the merge of this article into Naturism in the United States, I have begun by removing content that is both off-topic (nude entertainment, beaches not in the city) and outdated. WriterArtistDC (talk) 00:57, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the improvements, much appreciated! GnocchiFan (talk) 11:07, 23 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
