When the K8 was in development rumour had it that the Floating Point unit supported a new instruction set called Technical Floating Point (TFP). It was abandoned and SSE SIMD was added instead. Now it is rumoured that the socket F server processor called K8L will have a more powerful floating point unit. Perhaps TFP has been pulled back from the old drawings and added to the new K8L.

XDR DRAM[edit]

"Processors planned for Socket F will also likely support DDR3 and other technologies, like XD-RAM."

Isn't it supposed to be XDR DRAM or XDR ram? One would not say DD Ram scince it's not, but rather Double Data Rate, similar, im supposing, to XDR RAM. ive never heard of XD ram nor has google.. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDR_DRAM http://www.rambus.com/us/products/xdr_xdr2/index.html

edit: this quiry has gone too long unanswered, i will change it to XDR-DRAM and link it to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDR_DRAM, which anyone more knowlegable in the area is welcome to change.

Off topic[edit]

The third paragraph seems to veer off into AMD's plans. -Eddie

Requested move[edit]

"Socket F(1207)" is AMD's offical branding for this socket.

Please see http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/qcsalessheet_opteron_V4_02_19_07.pdf or http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_8826_14266,00.html or http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/sales_sheet_opteron_rev_f_v8.pdf or http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/Quad-Core_AMD_Opteron_processor_Fast_Facts.pdf where is says "Socket F(1207)" in several places - not "Socket F". Or look at offical AMD documents - you'll see titles such as "Thermal Design Guide for Socket F (1207) Processors" or "AMD64 Technology: Architectural Benefits Socket F (1207)". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr unix (talkcontribs) 19:35, March 11, 2008

  • Oppose. Official branding is not important; what matters is what people call this thing. From the references on the page, it is clear that people call it "Socket F". Sam Staton (talk) 12:44, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's true, though, that AMD seem to call it this, so I've included this fact in the article. Sam Staton (talk) 22:08, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reply. Just as many, if not more references could be added to the page from doing a Google search of "F (1207) site:amd.com" to sway the count from 'Socket F' to 'Socket F (1207)'. The reason it seems AMD likes to call it "F (1207)" is because that is its proper name and AMD docs are required to spell it that way. :-)
Hello. My understanding of WP:UCN is that the important thing is what the general public call it, not what AMD calls it in their official documents. I'm not proposing to count pages, what I meant was that, outside of the official AMD literature, people seem to omit the (1207). Sam Staton (talk) 12:47, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reply. I think this falls under "Some of these exceptions follow from guidelines that give recommendations for enhanced precision, cleaner disambiguation" of the Guidelines of common names.
