Article name

I think the name should be changed. It's just not Islamists who are fighting. We've got AU troops ,Old TFG milita, Ethiopian trained Clan milita and the some of the ICU fighters who are fighting against Al-Shabab mainly and Hisbi Islam. Most of the Islamists are in fact not fighting. In many places that are painted blue on the map there are actually a mix of Islamists. There are Anti-Sharif and Pro-Sharif ICU figthers in Jowhar,Beledweyne and Afgoye is controlled by Hisbi Islam.

I suggest we rename it War in Somalia 2009 -. We can name the other one Ethiopian Crisis/Intervention/Invasion.

Oh and one last point. Puntland forces aren't fighting anymore. Most of their best figthers have been thoroughly weakened/destroyed. We also have to make it clear that Ahlu Sunna Wa Jamha fighting in Central Somalia are not the real one. They are a clan milita being trained and funded by Ethiopia (just like the one in Gedo). Somalia has changed since 2006. Being a Clan milita won't get you any supporters. Furious Stormrage (talk) 15:54, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

No one responded to it for a month? I'll try renaming it myself. Furious Stormrage (talk) 13:15, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I believe you did the right thing, the article name is better now than before. But if you say is true shouldn't Puntland be in a diferent colour in the map? and what about the province of Cayn? It's surrounded by Somaliland that recently conquered the Sool province, what's happening in that zone? Thanks (Gomes89 (talk) 12:34, 23 March 2009 (UTC))

Thank you gomes. The thing with the map is that it's done by ingoman. He's not that active in the current conflict. On the Cayn issue. If I remember correctly Puntland isn't in charge of the area per se. It's just that Somaliland can't control it properly. The local clan milita of Widhwidh (hehe somali names are so silly sometimes. Makes me proud) killed two Somaliland officers. They were allegeldly (and mostly likely) supported by Puntland. I haven't heard of Somaliland reasserting control of that region nor Puntland sending people to take over it. So it looks like the locals control it and it's a frozen conflict until someone in Somaliland or Puntland tries to get political capital. Indeed in most parts of Somalia that are under "al-shabab"/"government" control. It's actually the locals who control it. The groups who are said to control it leave the locals alone unless they need something and the locals follow the rules set by the group supposedly in charge.

Puntland in theory supports the government but to be honest what the people want and what the regional goverment wants are two different things. The regional government wants a federal state that would preserve them in a newly formed Somali nation. They offer lip service but that's all. They don't care if Sharif succeeds or fails has long has they get to remain in power in their current territory (including the land lost to Somaliland). They haven't sent any troops there and probably won't after what Al-Shabab and the Islamic Courts did to their best ones last year. Furious Stormrage (talk) 15:45, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for the explanation Furious Stormrage, i believe you are somali living in the UK right? what is your opinion about this conflict? Do you think Somaliland should really be independent? If you ever need information about Portugal, just ask lol cheers mate. (Gomes89 (talk) 12:59, 3 April 2009 (UTC))

I don't think I should clutter this page with my very jaded feeling of my home country. I moved it to my talk page. It's all there. Furious Stormrage (talk) 18:40, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Is Somaliland supporting any part of that conflict? if yes, which one? thanks (Gomes89 (talk) 10:59, 19 March 2009 (UTC))

Somaliland is neutral in this war. Furious Stormrage (talk) 13:12, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Merge

Central Somalia spring fighting of 2009 could easily be merged here: no reason to have a separate article. It is a major escalation, but the main article needs expansion and Central Somalia spring fighting of 2009 is an unsourced name. The Battle of Mogadishu can stay and is much more notable --TheFEARgod (Ч) 16:41, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

You could also called in Battle of Central Somalia, but the fact is this is a sperate offensive launched by al-Shabaab to take control of Hiraan, Middle Shabelle and Galgudud.Kermanshahi (talk) 09:50, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Foreign Mujahedin

They are not a seperate combatant group, but it's that, there are foreigners fighting for al-Shabaab (and Hizbul Islam), these groups have foreign members.Kermanshahi (talk) 10:34, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

United States Involvment

At the bottom of the page it lists the United States as a key player, but this article doesn't even mention the United States or how it is involved. Could someone please explain in the article how the United States is involved. If not, remove the United States from the list of key players. -Lib —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.255.0.171 (talk) 13:44, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Well lets see.

1: Trained Ugandan,Ethiopia and Burundi are either fought or are still fighting for the TFG. 2: Provided logistical support and equipment to the AU troops. 3: Funds the TFG and AMISOM is always urging other nations to do so. 4: Funds the TFG and pays other African countries to train the TFG troops. 5: Put Al-Shabab under the Terror list last year because they were fighting the TFG. 6: Actually fought Al-Shabab in the jungles of Kismayo

This conflict isn't really African. If it was the way would have ended a long time ago. Since the US is involved other African countries are coming along to get a piece of the pie. Furious Stormrage (talk) 15:28, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Do you have a source for this information? If not, then the tag signifying US involvement should be removed. 76.29.110.161 (talk) 18:38, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Mukhtar Robow

As I made some edits before, I believe that Sh. Mukhtar Robow is not Al-shabab leader. He is Al-shabab Spokesman. The real leader for this movement is Godane. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.72.195.132 (talk) 05:27, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Result

  • Sharia Law imposed in Somalia.
  • Rebels take control over most of Mogadishu.

These two are already written in the result of War in Somalia (2006-2009). We should remove them. 98.119.158.59 (talk) 03:25, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

"Somali Forces Retake Town"

Al Jazeera is reporting on pro-Government forces taking towns in the south in mostly bloodless cases. Probably too early to tell whether its secure. http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2009/08/200981912920499787.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.132.70.10 (talk) 16:19, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

infobox - Somaliland

Currently the infobox lists Somaliland as al-Shabab aligned participant. And uses one Puntland source for that. I saw other sources explaining that this particular Puntland report is misleading and basically aims to present Somaliland in bad way - because of the Puntland–Somaliland dispute. But this dispute is unrelated to the al-Shabab vs. TFG War in Somalia (2009–). Alinor (talk) 13:02, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Added some updates, cleaned up

I put in more information on US and UNDP involvement. I decided to add the UNDP because it is funding the police force, which is basically paramilitary aid to the TFG. I also put the 2011 offensive under the name "Battle of Gashandiga," based on a source I found at SomaliaReport.com. I also cleaned up some non-NPOV text about the pirates and put in some updates and details about the two French advisors who were taken hostage. The section on the pirates looks like it needs more detail work. --Petercorless (talk) 21:43, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Map update?

Its been 3 months. Any chance we can get a map update? Noneofyour (talk) 21:16, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

I deeply agree. I'm saddened to see that this article seems to die.The situation evolved a lot and the map is completely oudated. Is Ingoman still there ? Otherwise , anyone else could update the map ? Many thanks. --Densaga (talk) 14:30, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Propose Closing this in Aug 2012 and starting new War in Somalia Phase

I'd recommend closing this page effective with the approval of the Somali constitution and permanant Federal Government.Ryan.opel (talk) 09:57, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

It looks like the war as a whole is about to end soon. Bardera seems to be Al-Shabaab's last major stronghold and the allied forces are already apparently marching towards it. Given this, perhaps we should be looking toward concluding the series. Middayexpress (talk) 13:53, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Clearly it isn't over yet. I also say this phase should be closed out and a new one started. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.30.73.158 (talk) 04:07, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Removing the Disagregated death data for 2012 from Uppsala Conflict Data Program

User:Middayexpress has removed the 2012 statistics for the Somali Civil War conflicts but added the reference as verification of the 500,000 death toll for the entire conflict. They also claim that the quote in itself violates the NPOV standard. Also they reference "c/e" which I am not familiar with in their deletion of the statistics. User:Middayexpress I will undo your revision and asked you to please explain your action on the talk page. Thank you.Wareditor2013 (talk) 13:10, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

The presentation of the datasets was inaccurate, as explained here. Middayexpress (talk) 13:15, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Outdated Map

The Federal Government pretty much controls most of the south now. Especially after the latest offensive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.218.89.121 (talk) 19:09, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

With the recent offensives by AMISOM and the Federal Government in March 2014 and the outdated flag for Jubaland, someone should update the map.67.172.156.194 (talk) 19:51, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

It's time to update the map. The lines have changes drastically in the year since its last update and even more so in the past month, so it's time to make it consistent with what is the current situation in Somalia.WisdomSeer (talk) 21:25, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

The map is indeed very outdated. The allied forces now control most of the south, with only a few towns under insurgent control. Middayexpress (talk) 19:29, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Please edit the map if you can. There is clear consensus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.125.179.172 (talk) 00:52, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

New Map Update

It's been over five months since the map was last updated. It may be an appropriate time now to do so again.WisdomSeer (talk) 20:41, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Map is not correct

Hello,

Map is not correct and it needs some changes. Bardera and Dinsoor are in the hands of Amisom since July 2015 (look at "Operation Juba Corridor"). Merka is in the hands of Al Shaabab since January 2016.

Goodbye.—SigmaK (talk), 15:36, 02 April 2016 (UTC)
